There are experts over in the sub-forum for your country located here http://www.visajourney.com/forums/forum/99-united-kingdom/  This is where others from your country who are processing or those who have completed their interview and they can guide you on their experience. A TON of information and help there.

2. I have read about the DS-160, but I need a DS application number, which I do not have.

Use your NVC case number for the application number.

3. How am I to get one?

By calling NVC. Details are in the PDF file found on the first page first post of any NOA2 to Embassy thread. Here is the link to the pdf file.

https://drive.google.com/file/d/1nfin98c33IEpB0T0FlURERriblYmlm5O/view

4. Is this done through the CEAC website - and on that website

No, through NVC. Instructions were given above.

5. is the K-1 classed as an Immigrant or Non-Immigrant Visa (there always seems to be some confusion on this point in some stages)?

Both. As a K1, when checking your case online at CEAC.state.gov you have to select "immigrant visa" as it is treated like as such even though it is a "non-immigrant visa".

Technically the K-1 is a non-immigrant visa but it is treated like an immigrant visa because of the AOS. It is kind of a ba$tard. Non-immigrant treated like an immigrant. Other non-immigrant visas do not usually end up with green cards!  The K-1 on its own is a single entry, short time limit visa that expires 90 days after POE. You are a non-immigrant (90 days limit) with immigrant intentions (GC). That is why it is a non-immigrant visa treated like an immigrant visa.

This stage is for those whose case was assigned a case number from NVC and wish to follow the status till it is set to "ready" condition for the interview. You have three stages 1) transit - shipment is in the air or soon will be, 2) received - physical case file is at the Embassy and 3) ready - your case is ready to schedule and complete your interview.  These will be your current state or status to your case file once you have received the case number.

My case is now saying ‘ready’ what’s the next step?

For you I don't know. You haven't take then time to complete your profile so I know your country nor your timeline.  Finish those and return and maybe we can help you. Each "next step" can be different for each embassy.

BTW please don't quote such a long reply to someone or to yourself. Use the "@" sign with the persons nik. Like this @Redibs. This will alert the person that you have replied to their post or you want them to advise you on a question. It's simpler and cleaner for the thread.

We need a little housekeeping on your end. Many of our answers are predicated on the information you supply in your profile. When we look at the left column and can't determine your timeline OR your Embassy it's hard for us to give you a factual answer. Our answers will sometimes be tailored to a specific Embassy hence the reason for you to complete your profile. If you look at the profile of others here, they have a flag for their country, so it makes it easy for us to reply as we can quickly determine their Embassy. The country that should be used is the country where the interview will take place.

So, if you could help yourself out and complete your profile that sure would help us out when we want to reply to your question with factual information.

Go to the top right of this page select your name (it's on the upper right-hand corner)>my profile>[below your picture on the right column] edit my profile. Scroll to the bottom and fill in "Immigration Info". There now we can better serve you.

Once you finish that then return and you will see a flag in your profile. Select it and see what wonderful information will open up for you.

Thanks. We will help you once you complete this part. Good luck.

Hello. I’m filling out the visa application online. It’s asking for my education background. I do not know the exact dates when I started and left each school. Is it ok to put estimates?

I see you are a newbie to VJ. Let me help you with a couple of learning items and the answer to your question.

1. You can use estimates for your education.

2. It's common practice to start your own thread if your topic is not being discussed in a thread already or that the thread is more then 3 months old. These are only suggestive parameters.

3. We use your profile that you see on the left column to determine some important facts that we use to answer your questions. So....
