I am sure this must have been asked a million times and for asking again, I apologise

When you are finally leaving to go "home" how much cash in dollars can you carry on board.

is it $10,000 each person or $10,000 per couple

Thanks in advance (thinking ahead here folks  )

My answer is not to bring $10k in cash anywhere! There has to be a safer alternative for you.

You're allowed up to $10K; but it is better to carry MO's (or traveller's cheques) for that amount rather than cash.

i've always wondered though ... in lieu of carrying and then declaring that much money and paying taxes ... couldn't you leave it in a UK bank that you have a debit/check card to and just withdraw the money over a period of time?

so yeah .... i have no clue ... just wonderin'!

Good ideas there and we had considered that but we want to move the lot over here, most will be moved by bank transfer but we will also have an amount of cash due to cash sales of cars, and garden furniture.

That cash will come in after we have transferred our saving, cashed in investments and equity in the house

so as long as I know how much we can take in between us we will probably get it transferred to travellers cheques and just take a couple of hundred dollars

Thanks folks

Ok, lets clarify this... YOU CAN BRING ANY AMOUNT YOU WANT, IN ANY FORM (cash, checks, travellers checks, bearer bonds, whatever).

The catch is that if you have MORE then 10k, you have to report it to customs. Not a big deal if the money if from a legitimate source.

Lets say you sold your house, car, whatever, and are carrying a large sum of money. All you have to have is documentation proving the source of the funds, fill out a form at customs, and your free to do whatever.

There I said it.

Yes. You can bring in and/or take out any amount. The most important thing is that you declare it when it needs to be declared.

International money wiring is the best option. My bank charged me $35.00 USD last week to send out. I didn't file any forms as I assume the bank takes care of that for me. But if you carry on your person you would need to file.

Also, for travellers check. If it is made out to you and you are carrying it. You probably don't need to file the form. I tried to file the form last year, but the CBP guy at the airport looked at me like I was crazy. But better safe than sorry (i.e. them taking the money away)
