Stolen Greencard while abroad- Fee waiver possibility.

Hi everyone.

 

I travelled back to my home country Sweden end of last month and first thing that happened when I landed is my wallet got stolen. Inside was my greencard and unfortunately also my ssn card 😫 it's been a horrible, and expensive trip so far and I am now back home but I had to apply for a boarding foil which delayed my departure so I had to reschedule my flight and couldn't go back to work on time. Anyways,  it is what it is, my questions is :

1: would I have a chance to be approved for a fee waiver although we earn more than enough but I have to spend $1500 because of this incident? Suggestions please.

2: What will I have to apply for if travelling while waiting for my new greencard?

 

Please any answers, suggestions helps.

Your profile says "Adjustment of Status (pending)".  You might want to update that.......I honestly don't think you will qualify for a fee waiver based on the loss of the green card......but you can try....You can probably get a temporary I-551 stamp in your passport which would serve as your green card until the new one arrives.

 

As you said, you earn more than enough.........a failed attempt at a waiver will just delay the card production.

Sorry to hear it.

1. How did you come up with $1500 for the replacement fee? As per USCIS is $540 currently.

2. You can try to get a stamp in your passport. Call USCIS and see if they schedule an appointment at the local office. You might need to file for the replacement first. Not sure.

2.a) I don't think you are eligible for the fee wavier. https://www.uscis.gov/archive/fee-waiver-guidance

 

I know it doesnt help, but when I travel I try to bring the minimal amount of ID i can and never store it in my wallet. I still have my european ids, so once I am at the airport i pull my us documents out of my wallet.

Embassy won’t issue transportation foil until they see receipt for I-90 (online). Just pay the money and watch your belongings.

I know, one of the reasons does say this though:

"You are experiencing a financial hardship that prevents you from paying the filing fee, including unexpected medical bills or emergencies". 

 

But you're probably right, they'll probably deny it.

I dont have travel insurance unfortunately.

 Inability to pay, financial hardship etc.

$1500 all together would be the total that I have had to spend because the incident (new greencard included) i had to change my flight too because of this so that costed almost $400.

I'm sorry about this and I know money is still an issue but I would also be worried about a stolen SSN.

No harm in trying, other than having to refile if/when the waiver gets denied.

I wonder if i could save the money and instead pay to apply for citizenship?! 🤔 My husband said I have to give my greencard to them at the ceremony or when you get approved. Anyone knows if this would be a possibility even though I dont physically have my greencard?
