Name change at AOS interview

Hi all, since I was here before on a work visa and had a SSN prior to marriage we sent in aos packet with my maiden name without thinking about that aspect (regretfully). My interview has been scheduled (probably some time in April, waiting for letter) and I want to ask for my green card to be with my married name... can/should I change my name with SS before the interview? Or do I do that after uscis says it's ok?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello ,

i am from France and I had my interview in Paris last Wednesday.
the woman who asked me my papeworks before my interview with the consular officer asked me which name I want on my green card .
On my application it was my birth name followed by my married name .
At her question I said that I just want my married name .
They hey will probably ask you that the day of the interview don’t worry

I was about to start a topic asking the same question!! I filled out my paperwork using only my maiden name since I don’t have any other documents besides my home country passport.

Glad to hear they can do that during the interview!! :)

I'd suggest notifying them of the name change as soon as you can. Otherwise they will issue the green card in the name as written on the I-485. Changing it later takes months and a hefty ($455) fee for the I-90.

Note that there is a difference in process between a visa interview abroad and an AOS interview.

Your marriage certificate is the legal name change document. You're able to use your married name already of you want too.

How would I notify them before the interview? And why would they issue it before my interview?

I am using it for several things and I want to legally change with social security but I don't know if uscis will have an issue because of the different name.

If there was more time before the interview, I'd say send a letter. But since that likely won't even be looked at by the time of the interview, my suggestion is to raise the item at the interview and ask if the IO can change the name there.

They wouldn't. I meant that if you don't tell them, they will definitely issue it in the existing name.

USCIS won't care, although the SSA may refuse to do so w/o USCIS doing so first.

Thanks. I'll contact SSA tomorrow and see what they say...

Something I just thought of: does it really makes sense to change it now? Cause you would have to go back again after getting the greencard and get rid of the EAD text.

Haven't gotten EAD yet... local office is faster than nbc 💪🏻

Same for me! No EAD, no SSN... And I think changing the name in the green card later would be a pain. It’s expensive to request a new card and it can take forever too

I do have a SSN and I looked into changing name today... gonna hold off until after interview because they ask for status and I don't want to have to change it again with SSA 🤦‍♀️

Hi, sorry to come into this but I was just wondering how you eventually resolved this issue? I’m in the same situation, I only put my maiden name on my adjustment of status paperwork as well as paperwork for the employment authorisation etc. I have my biometrics appt Tuesday so wondering whether to now put my new name on that paperwork or if there’s anyway to notify them or if I’m stuck now?

Any help would be appreciated!

Hey, sorry, just saw the notification today.

I am actually just about to add my husband's last name as an additional name because my aos interview was waived and I've had my GC since April. So I will have to phase the maiden name out...  😅

For now there's nothing you can do. There is nowhere to change name at biometrics appt. Wait until your interview and ask to change it then. Otherwise, there's a name change application you can send but it's a waste of money imo... good luck!
