Which news media do you mean? Between daily local updates, print news, regular cable news, and info on twitter there's plenty of stories about supposed recovered people... 

 

But how do we define recovered? Especially considering some could still be potential 'carriers' after recovery and some have had the virus reactivate after the supposed 'recovery'.

 

We still do not have accurate numbers from China or Iran.. but we can see that Iran are digging mass graves.

Follow South Korea, the Philippines, Indonesia, Singapore, Taiwan, etc.  I have not seen any of the big mainstream media types talking about the flattening of new cases in those locales.  I also do not remember the same level of media criticism back in 2009 either.

Did you not watch Fox back then? The daily barrage worked my dad into a tizzy to the point he thought I was going to die when I became infected (he was too but didn't want to believe it because his constant coughing all over everything and everyone was just ''allergies").

 

Look, the fact is H1N1 OF 2009 was quite different in terms of survivability, available fast testing for all, treatments, and a vaccination fairly quickly. We don't have those things in this case. Despite that back in 2009 I remember quite clearly (you tend to remember these things when you contract them) a daily tally of those infected, very sad stories of parents watching helplessly as their little kids died, everyone talking about how horrible a cough it left them with, and the usual onslaught from the media all about it. Without our grandparents and great-grandparents previous exposure to the 1918-1919 pandemic the US likely would have been worse off. There were also a great deal of accusations tossed at WHO at the time and further studies came out later with critical outlooks of the eventual outcome. I'd be happy to pull up some of those criticisms, and perhaps some of them had very valid points as a warning of what was to come, today.

  What I see now from the media is similar to what I recall from 2009. People are panicking, and reactions are different this time, and the handling of the situation has been sub par. The CDC's response to H1N1 was actually reassuring.

I don’t remember the media ridiculing the President back then.  They may have sounded alarm bells, but this response just shows more of the bias of the mainstream media.  And no, President Obama did not walk on water back then.

     My memory is pretty good Bill. Perhaps refresh yours. Link a clip or article of one time where Obama made the 2009 pandemic about himself and/or the media. The criticism is the administration's handling of this is misplaced, but deserved.

Okay in the interest of fairness (and because I recall a few of these) I pulled up some criticisms (though the nightly boys on Fox were whipping to a frenzy every night back then... sometimes they couldn't make up their minds what to be upset about: as in not having a vaccine and that might kill you vs we have a vaccine and it might kill you!). Anti vax agenda pushing got pretty big after that with celebs.

 

At one big issue back then, was the delay on the vaccination. While we had plenty of tests, we had been promised vaccinations for all. Well that didn't happen, and that caused a lot of anger about the administrations failure and delay on promises. During the Ebola outbreak people were also highly critical of the administration's perceived timidity and lack of seriousness about Ebola as well.

Some were critical that we did not break into a national stockpile of Tamiflu and distribute at the time, some were angry that schools weren't being closed which was putting little ones at risk. This OP-ED written by a D and R, criticized the administration's efforts under the CDC using antiquated methods of vaccination development and how unprepared we were for 'the big one' . And even when we got a vaccination, over on Fox, commentators then decided that the vaccination effort was now too fast and warning that it was a plot to infect more of the populace or cause anything from cancer to autism. Of course this fallacy didn't just come from the right, because there were some on the other side too that bought into anti-vaccine bunk. And of course there was the stigma against the pork industry which was just ridiculous, oh and also those that wanted the administration to close the border with Mexico.

  Both my kids got cancelled today too until after spring break. Spring break here is the week after next. There were a couple of positive tests on kids in the district. No doubt many more untested. 

 

  The smart thing to do would be all or nothing with these. Makes no sense to close some schools and leave others open. If half the schools are open, the virus continues to circulate. Once they decide it's time to close schools, they should close them all in state.

It's perhaps heading that way, especially in the big urban districts; but tiny, isolated districts ought to be exempt for now, if they choose.  Trouble is, their sports teams might not have anyone to play against.

  I'm not sure who qualifies as isolated in this day and age though. China got things under control by completely closing everything possible in the quarantine area for a long enough time frame to stop the spread of the virus. If you do that and leave only a few positive carriers outside the containment zone, the whole thing as at risk of escalating again. Half measures really won't work.
