1) develop a new proprietary test and scale manufacturing fast
2) reject existing approved tests
3) when it's ready to ship, declare an emergency to allow the new test to skip FDA approval
4) cover-up of the failings of the quick-to-market test
5) Pence/CDC grants the contracts for "115 qualified U.S. laboratories, such as state and local public health laboratories and Department of Defense (DoD) laboratories, as well as 191 qualified international laboratories" effectively giving all the market share to their test and their supplier(s)
History will reveal this entire episode as another classic example of how the Trump GOP uses the government to exploit a pandemic for profit. Follow the money and the cronies and the names of the opportunists in this corner-the-market scheme will eventually come out.

  From releasing a test center location app? Oscar is an insurance company, not a laboratory. They are not doing any of the testing. If the government is covering the cost of the test, I don't think it really effects health insurance companies one way or the other.

 

  Overall though, I think health insurance companies generally profit from people not getting sick. I don't think a pandemic is going to be good for their bottom line.

I'm sure there are more cases in the US. I asked to be tested but they said they don't have enough tests and since my age puts me at a low risk, they're not going to test me. I might be having a cold or the flu but I'll never know.

I'm fine, my symptoms are mild and I'm working from home. I'm just worried about spreading it to people who might not be fine.

I am sure there are as well.  And the numbers are going to get much larger soon with the increased testing.  But as we have been saying for a while now, the real numbers will never be known.  For all we know, folks who had the flu (or died from it) actually had CV19, but were never tested.

 

Whatever you have, wishing you a speedy and non-eventful recovery.   Part of me wishes I would just get it and get it over with, so I won't be at risk later this year when it makes a comeback.

Unfortunately, it looks like they virus lingers for a while after you've recovered and it's not clear you build an immunity to it. There are people who tested positive after they had been cleared.

You do build an immunity to it, but this kind of virus is also unstable, readily changes through mutation/recombination when interacting with a host cell. So, won't be a surprise when we're dealing with a handful of different strains that the body has to learn to fight individually. This is why, while research is good, wider behaviors and methods of infection need to be addressed to allow for illnesses to resolve and settle this down.

 

Even though I think we are indeed about to overreact, and in some cases already are, I'm hoping, against the odds of all things normal, we use this experience to better prepare for a pandemic that would really be a threat to humans. Things only happening at such a late stage, globally, demonstrates that no one on a mass scale is truly prepared.

It's a bit late to get religion about the impact of this now.

Last week we were being pitched conspiracy theories and this is just like the flu. 

That thinking killed more people.
