Do you have a French driving licence. Is so check with your DMV how long it is valid for in your State. Oregon would allow me to drive for 12 months from, my date of arrival, on my British licence or any EU licence for that matter.

What to expect at the POE - WIKI entry

Hi Lansbury

Tks, I have an international permitt... So, it's available until august 07...

Hi there,

Just to let you know what the DMV in CA thinks about international permits........

International Driving Permits

The State of California does not recognize an International Driving Permit (IDP) as a valid driver license. California does recognize a valid driver license that is issued by a foreign jurisdiction (country, state, territory) of which the license holder is a resident.

The IDP is only a translation of information contained on a person's foreign driver license and is not required to operate a motor vehicle in California. Citations issued to a person in California who has an IDP, but does not have a California driver license will be placed on the Department of Motor Vehicle database.

The IDP is also called an International Driver License, International License, etc.

For more information about travel and driver licensing requirements outside of the US, visit the US State Department Road Safety Overseas website at: http://travel.state.gov/road_safety.html

I hope we can drive for some time with our home drivers license for a little bit. I am still waiting on my SSN and greencard so I can't drive with a CA license either.

11-05-06 Sent I-130 to California

06-01-07 INTERVIEW

06-04-07 Received VISA in the mail. Silly Consulate issued me CR-1 instead of IR-1, no time to change it in Australia, will try to change it once in California.

06-10-07 POE SFO

06-21-07 Receive SSN#

07-12-07 Receive Green Card in the mail STILL HAD CR1 INSTEAD OF IR1

12-10-07 Finally sent I-90 asking for a new green card with correct info.

06-17-08 INFOPASS - Was told USCIS sent new green card to old address back in Jan. Will resend it but may not be able to correct error as it was made by Consulate not USCIS.

What to do now??

I just got back from my local DMV here in the Santa Barbara county and was told I am allowed to drive on my Australian license for 30 days from the time I first arrived as a perm resident. After 30 days I have take the written test and then the driving test.

He also told me the actual driving test was no more than 15mins, did not involve driving on the freeway and there was no parallel parking. So I am pretty confident I will be ok on the test.

I suggest you go to your local DMV and get confirmation on whether or not you can drive with your license.

goodluck!

CA DMV is not picky at all. They don't recognize an international driver's permit, but they do recognize a valid DL from another country. As long as the OP has a DL from the home country, he/she can drive in CA for up to a month.

Filed AOS from F-1
Green Card approved on 01/04/07
Conditions removed 01/29/09

Citizenship Oath 08/23/12

Did you ask if you need to have your EAD first before obtaining a DL? That might be the case. Here in Georgia it was the case for my husband. Just a thought. Best wishes on the job hunt. :)
