Hi All,

I will be going for my interview within the next month or so and I am wanting to self sponsor with circa $44k, I was wondering if anyone had self sponsored recently in London and if so what their experience was like? I've read threads regarding similar situations from a few years ago but I am hoping for some more up to date information.

Thanks!

I haven’t heard mention of it in the UK forum on here recently. That is where a lot of people discuss London interviews. Just take documentation of your assets. You would not do an I-134.

Cheers, would it be worth posting this on there too you think?

And yeah I'm aware of that, more curious as to whether they're taking a more hardline stance since the new public charge laws came in.

Haven’t heard any comments concerning it. I wouldn’t think K1 would be affected since it’s not giving you a greencard or using the I-864. Here a late February K1 review of someone nervous about the Affidavit of Support. Doesn’t appear to have been a harder stance than any time in the last decade that I have followed London.

Lovely stuff, thanks for the responses! :)

From your experience, is there any known minimum for self sponsor at London? I know the COs there are generally pretty lenient but I'm still curious.

 No stated required minimum that I have ever heard. It is a total judgement call by the officer on the day. I think $44k will be more than enough. If I am remembering correctly, various people that came back to tell their story had—

$52,000

Somewhere in the $40,000 range

A contract to sell UK house. Not even a closed sale by interview.

A combo of fiancé with small part time income, some ongoing income from phone apps he (UK bloke) wrote, and $8000 in UK savings.

Thanks a lot for the info, really interesting.

@goldhex

Something I just thought about was this new stricter public charge that just became effective about a week ago. That is unknown territory how it will play out and applies more to immigrant visas and the I-864 Affidavit of Support.  The Foreign Affairs Manual is basically the law applying to visas. It is updated now to include:

Alien Seeking Admission as K Nonimmigrants:  K nonimmigrants and their petitioners are not permitted to complete form I-864.  You may request a K applicant complete Form DS-5540 to assist in evaluating likelihood of becoming a public charge.  Note that K applicants will again be assessed under the public charge ineligibility by USCIS at the time of adjustment of status where the K nonimmigrant seeking adjustment of status will be required to submit a Form I-864.

Before it was always a judgement call by the person interviewing you that he is convinced you will not become a public change. Notice it still is his judgement call but suggests he can ask you for that new form mentioned if he needs help deciding.

Frankly because London has been probably the most nonchalant embassy when it comes to public charge, I wouldn’t expect a person with $44k to leave any doubt that he will apply for welfare in the US upon arrival before completing the I-864 for AOS. But you might want to look over the form to know what kinds of things are on it which he could ask you verbally if he desires or even ask you to fill it out. I kinda doubt London will require this form of K1s, but heads up so you know about it since you are a little different by self-sponsoring and this is uncharted territory. I seriously would not panic about it.  London is quite chill at visa interviews. https://eforms.state.gov/Forms/ds5540.PDF

London just seem to require enough to last 90 days and that should reach the requirement. used to be you could ask them.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

@Wuozopo

Thank you for that, I'll probably just end up completing that form and bringing it with me along with my documentation of assets, and then that way on the off chance I'm asked about it I'll already have it ready to go.

It seems like common sense that even someone with $5k+ available to them would be able to support themselves through the initial period so like you say $44k shouldn't leave much doubt in the COs mind.

@Boiler

Yeah I'm aware they're pretty lenient, I was more curious whether the new public charge laws would have changed anything, which has thankfully been clarified by Wuozopo.
