Hi. May I know the average processing time of AOS in New Jersey. Also, if I receive my 2yr green card, can i file re-entry permit to finish my nursing school in the Philippines? I have 3 semesters left and due to the change of curriculum I might stay for another semester. I need some advice. I’d rather go back to the Ph than getting in debt with student loans here in the US.

There are two USCIS field offices that handle New Jersey, and they seem to have very different processing times.

Go to https://www.uscis.gov/about-us/find-uscis-office/field-offices and search by your zip code to find out which one handles your area.

You can look up official I-485 processing times for that office here https://egov.uscis.gov/processing-times/

and can see the averages experienced by other VJ users here https://www.visajourney.com/timeline/aosstats.php?cfl= .

After you get your GC you can go back to the PI but don't stay any longer then 6 months or you will have problems reentering the US. They look at cases like that, that you are abandoning your GC and will deny you reentering.

But I can go back here in the US after a semester then go back to the PH again right? As long as I don’t stay outside the US for more than 6 months? A semester takes 5 months.

I'm not all that up to what you can or can't do after the initial visit. I am going to invite another member who can shed some light on this topic. Oh @geowrian....

If you plan to study abroad after getting a green card, my suggestion would be to obtain a re-entry permit. So it seems you were on the right path. 👍

This would be via filing an I-131 for a re-entry permit (you do have to pay the I-131 fee for this) while inside the US. Then the biometrics has to be done in the US. The actual card can be sent to you in the US or sent to the consulate abroad for pickup.

The card will be valid for up to 2 years before you need a new one.

A re-entry permit is not an end-all to protect somebody from abandoning status, but for a student, I would not expect any issues. Just be sure to file your US taxes, and try to obtain/use a US bank account and/or credit card where you can, etc.

Note that the time abroad will impact your timeline for eligibility for naturalization.
