I think some of it has to do with where you are -- I have friends who married in Tennessee a few years ago, GIGANTIC wedding (~400 people, his parents paid for it), and it was still under $20k. I doubt I could have anything nearly as large out here for that amount without compromising on what I want. (To be fair, they just started divorce proceedings so...)

I have already had my big wedding, so has Alex. I think we're on the same page that a smaller event with ~100 people is what we're looking for. My bigger concern (and one that is troubling me more and more) is how to handle his ex. We 100% have to have his daughter with us on the day, but she'll be 7 by the time we get married. That means her mum needs to be over here too. Her mum and I are friendly and have a pretty good rapport (we used to be closer years ago, but time moved on) but I feel weird saying (1) come celebrate the wedding of your ex-husband! or (2) your daughter is welcome but you probably don't want to be there. What is the happy medium? Like, have another relative collect his daughter for the day and arrange for the ex-wife to do a spa day or something? I have no experience with any of this. I want the ex-wife to be happy and not to feel awkward, because she's a good person and really pretty lovely. I want this to hurt as little as possible for her.

I think you have the basis of a film script there, ok I am sure the situation is not new and my first thought is that it very much depends on the relationships between the parties and there can not be a standard response.

So just some issues of the top of my head:

Do you know ex and ex's Mother want to come, do they have the time to do so that they are willing to sacrifice? Who pays.

Your date, does that depend on School Hols, presumably this would not be a long weekend trip.

On what planet is 100 a small wedding btw.

If you get on reasonably with the Grandmother why not call her and tell her what the deal is, he wants his daughter there natch, how is the best way to do this, we are all adults but there are obvious issues and what would everybody feel comfortable with.

“If you know the enemy and know yourself, you need not fear the result of a hundred battles. If you know yourself but not the enemy, for every victory gained you will also suffer a defeat. If you know neither the enemy nor yourself, you will succumb in every battle.”

You have given me a lot to think about. I hadn't even thought about school holidays and that's a big issue, ugh. The ex doesn't work and neither does ex's mother (retired). The ex is far more willing to be around Alex than her mother is (you did my daughter wrong, etc). The daughter's godfather is coming to the wedding, and he is very close to the family, but I don't know if that's realistic. I think I can butter up the ex and find out what it will take to make her feel comfortable. If she wants to be there (god knows when Voldy remarries I want nothing to do with it), that's fine. I don't see why she'd be against having the little girl with us since she knows and trusts me. It's just delicate. I would like to think the ex would be fine with having her daughter travel with Al's mum and sister but who knows. I want us all to be adults, and the ex can be fairly reasonable these days. I'm just a worrier.

Wonder if all of Borris's children will be at the wedding, a good time to do a head count.

Okay, I read Martha Stewart on this: https://www.marthastewartweddings.com/2105831/etiquette-advice-inviting-exes-wedding

I'm still confused! I think the best thing to do is for me to let the parents of the child take the reins on this one and do whatever they think is best.

Boris needs to keep it zipped from now on or get the snip. Six (seven?) kids by a whole variety of baby mamas isn't a good look. Even Trump was married to all of his!

Does Al have a view on is it the usual male response?

The view was "I'm too jetlagged to think." He saw his daughter (and ex) on Saturday down in Dorset where they live, he didn't think to talk about it then because we don't have a date so it's all premature (apparently). I am going to ask the mum to send me the dates for school holidays, and to ask her to please raise it with him after his call with his daughter on Saturday morning. He's passed out now so it's all moot for the evening.

I was rewatching that Sound of Music clip and saw something of myself in the panicky smile of the Baroness, like, what the hell was I thinking marrying a man with children??? At least there is only one I have to think of, and she is not here.

I will assume usual male.

I though he was engaged to to the Baroness but broke it off to marry Maria.

He was -- I was unclear. I should have said, what was I thinking in getting engaged to a man with children??

Yeah, usual male.* Punt it down the road a little and let the women do the heavy lifting.

*My apologies to the men who post in here. You are all most unusual and complete paragons of engaged husbands and fiances who never, EVER, pass the buck.

Men are worthless, ignorable appendages who should shut up and know their place when it comes to weddings.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

Okay, Martha Stewart says 100 is a medium-sized wedding. Fair enough. I'm just comparing to our last ones.

I can see you and Meghan becoming BFF.

So going back a step why does what Martha say matter? Are you related?

Lol, no not related to Martha Stewart. An aunt gave me her Weddings book last go round, and I consulted it frequently back then. I was trying to accommodate a very traditional taste in a wedding and Martha is a safe pair of hands in that regard. It's all exceptionally tasteful. Anyway, I sort of default to Martha for knowing what's what. I have this coming via Amazon now though: https://www.amazon.com/Practical-Wedding-Affordable-Stress-free-Celebration/dp/0738246727 A bit more modern. Maybe Meghan would approve. :P

Anyway, the latest is BoJo is taking paternity leave this summer: https://www.theguardian.com/politics/2020/mar/03/boris-johnson-paternity-leave-prime-minister-carrie-symonds This pic from the article cracks me up:

Alex and I were in bed talking last night about the thousand million (or thousand million +1) children Boris has, and he said to me that it was beyond him how any woman could bear having that "shapeless sack of #####" anywhere near her body, let alone the "seemingly unending parade of wives and tarts" and I reminded him that for some women, physical attractiveness is down the list, and power/money/social clout is worth more. And for that matter, a charming personality can make someone very attractive, and Boris (apparently) can be very charming. Then he told me that he agreed about the charming personality bit, because look, here he was with me. <_< No sandwich for him for at least three days.

I could see Boris just taking that pose for laughs.

How about this as a OMG?

Poor Georgina Chapman. :( I love Marchesa and have been looking at some Marchesa Notte gowns for the wedding. Glad to see she is moving on, but I feel really bad for her kids, who love their dad even though he's a monster.

Daily Mail gives some updates on what's going on with Chapman: https://www.dailymail.co.uk/news/article-8041873/How-Harvey-Weinsteins-ex-wife-Georgina-Chapman-moved-leaving-disgraced-movie-mogul.html

I had heard she had moved with some actor.

Made me think of this:
