US-Nepali marriage, post-ceremony we are experiencing court marriage filing issues

Hello VisaJourney,

I am an American citizen marrying a Nepali citizen, we had our ceremony on the 17th, soon after I received my affidavit to marry from the Embassy, and have today went to the local government's office to get proof of my 15-day residency. Once we have this document we can proceed to Kathmandu's court to file the marriage certificate.

The gentleman at the office was extremely difficult and claimed he could not sign off, asking "why do I have to do it? It says right there on the visa." The court will not do anything until our local area's office verify residency and proof of eligibility.

Does anyone have any ideas or suggestions for our situation? The overall mood here is that we will not be helped unless we *know someone* who cares to help.

Any thoughts will be appreciated, thank you

Yes some people in such agencies see the $$$$ flashing as soon as they see the US Passport. Two ways to solve:

1. Deal yourself: May take several days or weeks, tell them you’ll talk to their supervisors. Use your Nepalese spouse to deal with them. The problem is that sometimes the entire chain is known for such corruption. You come into contact with any of one good supervisor, you’ll get the 15-day residency letter.

2.Use a broker: there will be brokers outside that office building or even inside. A bit expensive, but they will get it done.

Spouse:

Correct.  Do what you need to do.  This kind of thing is common in many countries.  "Fixer" is a common term in such situations.

Facts are cheap...knowing how to use them is precious...

Friend, get a fixer (mediator/ Dalal in Nepali) please have your state marriage law translated into Nepali. Otherwise, they will give you even more trouble.
Other option and probably the best way to do this is to catch a guy who works inside the courthouse. He/she is usually a person who prepares all the documents and usually known as Typer  and sits in front of the computer and that’s where your file will go to before it moves further to the chief officers. If you catch him you’re saving a lot of money otherwise you have to get a fixer and spend a lot of money. Also carry your original affidavit of marriage as they keep that in the courthouse and keep copy to yourself. Hopefully, this helps.
Only pay less than Rs. 5000 to the fixer if you got luck to catch them.
goodluck
