Socialism's Inequalities

Angelo Codevilla - February 29th, 2020

Few statements are more revealing of ignorance than the standard conservative indictment of socialism for "equally spreading poverty.  According to this critique, poverty happens when socialism's insistence on equality of conditions deprives people of the incentive to work. Such statements so offend reality as to lead one to ask whether those who make them have ever opened their eyes in a socialist country. [...]

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I always get amused with slams against socialism that don't define Scandinavian countries as Socialist even though 55-60% of the GDP is public spending.

I always get amused at people who think Nordic countries are socialist.

This may help:

Currently, these countries include Algeria, Bangladesh, Guyana, India, Nepal,Nicaragua, North Korea, Portugal, Sri Lanka and Tanzania.

And the knock against Bernie is that he is labeled a Socialist, and calls himself a socialist, for policies to that align to the Nordic countries.

I only know about 6 people who come from that area.  They love it.  They brag about the beauty,  the people, the free stuff.

But every time I ask someone why they left there for the US, every single one of them say the taxes are too high.  Wonder why that is??

What is the Nordic position on Reparations? They do not seem that keen on open borders?

The taxes are high and that is reflected in a culture that values equality and does not celebrate wealth.  That part might be a struggle for some Americans.

I am not defending one society over another, I am simply noting that Bernie is knocked as a Socialist and what he is promoting is Nordic style "socialism"

According to some, all Democrats are socialist but Bernie is a Communist.

As pointed out in the Article, America left the "pure" Capitalism camp in the 1930s

As the Nordic countries are not socialist countries the whole issue is somewhat misleading, is IKEA State owned?

Which Nordic Country has M4All? My understanding is that they all have a mixed Healthcare system.

I believe my previous post about that flew right over his head.  I wonder if he will grasp yours?

I doubt it.

The thing is that there are very few pure anything Countries. Purity very rarely works, and any system that starts as sort of pure is soon corrupted.

If socialist professors say that education is a good thing for a country, why don't they teach for free?

The nature of big government fanatics rampant throughout the left, globally, is they want government deciding winners and losers rather than a population. It's no surprise we've seen more income inequality in the west, especially the US and Canada, under the increasing guise of "managed economies" than the laissez faire economy of old could ever possibly achieve.

Same reason they try and undo elections they don't agree with.

It can't be seen as anything more than a religion (a manifest of [social] imagination), one has to ignore the consistent results of socialism, if not pretend its something else entirely, to suggest its workable.
