Hello All,

My wife and I have our interview coming up soon and I was looking for past experiences on a question. My wife and I had been dating for 6 months when the day came that her sponsor school (she worked as a teacher) informed her she would not be getting a renewal on her position for next school. That same day we both knew we could not love without each other and decided to get married. We had a short engagement and a beautiful wedding a month later with all our friends and family.

I wanted to see how people answer when the question is asked "Why did you get married". Obvious it is for love and we could not face losing each other. However I'm just curious to see input from past experiences.

If you get married to help a person to obtain a legal status in the US, it is fraud.

If you marry out of love and the result is the person gets legal status it is not.

Not all cases are this clear cut and this is when it gets important to think back at the whole process to figure out how you got here.

If you were dating at the time and had the intend of getting married, but never bothered with it as there was no reason because of the visa, you are approaching the first scenario. Not saying it is fraud, but an IO could easily see it that way.

If you are living together and are planning on getting married you are basically stating you are engaged. There is no law stating what needs to be done for an engagement. The fact that the you plannend the wedding date so you do not have to spent time apart, is not fraud. At least that is my opinion.

As to how to answer the question;

Truthfully, that is the only advise we can give you. Really lying doesn't make a lot of sense as they are pretty good at reading people.
