I think masks will be out of stock for a while. Even hospitals are rationing them now. For most other things though, I think stores will be happy to supply as many items as people want to buy, in the short run at least.

The biggest reason I am going to Walmart is that the checkouts in the one near us are 100% automated now, so it's easier to avoid getting boxed in with people coughing all over you. I just pick an empty line and get through as fast as possible.

My wife just asked my "Where do you think we are around the most people in a confined space?"........I think it is definitely when we shop for food at the Asian market........I also only use the self-checkouts when I go to walmart........but I certainly wash my hands after touching those keypads....

A lot of things work better than hand sanitizer, but it's hard to beat the convenience of something you have with you when you need it. Just because of the kids, my wife usually has hand sanitizer with her in case we need it, but it's not as easy to carry a jug of vinegar around in your purse.

Since I can't find hand sanitizer, I think some alcohol soaked paper towels in a baggie will be help.....or I'll just carry around a small bottle of alcohol....

My biggest thing is remembering to avoid touching my face with my hands while I am out. I am watching the kids then they do it, and having them call me out if they see me. Trying to break those old habits now. We haven't had any positive cases here in Colorado yet (that we know of), but you never know where the first one will be. It's a good idea just for other viruses anyway.

Here you go, a gallon of unscented hand sanitizer for $50: https://www.bulkapothecary.com/product/raw-ingredients/unscented-bases/unscented-hand-sanitizer-gel-base/

You could really splurge and buy the 55 gallon drum!!!!

I just checked Amazon for hand sanitizer, since 3 local stores have none.  (2) 8 oz. bottles are selling for $85.99.

Ridiculous.

SMH. The rotten part is these Amazon gougers are part of the reason the supply is running low. The average person is buying a few bottles, but these "sellers" are buying cases of it so they can rip people off reselling it. Hopefully Amazon puts a stop to it.

Looks like retailers are trying to get a handle on the price gouging. Must be an uphill battle though.

I got a handle on it.  Just bought rum and vodka.  Rum for the internals, vodka for hands and what not.  Sure, it's not 50% or higher ABV. but the dual- pronged approach should prove effective.

Being 1/4  Mexican, I can assure adding and extra lime helps a lot.

I can also say that yesterday, on our flight back from Tokyo, that everytime my saying Wuhan everytime my mom sneezed made the mask wearers a bit more concerned.

I do a semi annual check for stuff that's going to outdate, but I still end up with some from time to time. I am trying to finish some cereal bars that expired in January right now. They seem OK. I will definitely throw away meat or dairy once it gets past the expiration. I don't want to mess around with getting sick. It's a rare occurrence, but usually only happens if I'm in a rush and don't check the date when I buy it.

Oh, of course -- meat and dairy (especially dairy) needs to go soon after expiration.

I'll take a test bite out of things like wrapped cereal bars; if one is OK, so might the others be.

06-04-2007 = TSC stamps postal return-receipt for I-129f.

06-11-2007 = NOA1 date (unknown to me).

07-20-2007 = Phoned Immigration Officer; got WAC#; where's NOA1?

09-25-2007 = Touch (first-ever).

09-28-2007 = NOA1, 23 days after their 45-day promise to send it (grrrr).

10-20 & 11-14-2007 = Phoned ImmOffs; "still pending."

12-11-2007 = 180 days; file is "between workstations, may be early Jan."; touches 12/11 & 12/12.

12-18-2007 = Call; file is with Division 9 ofcr. (bckgrnd check); e-prompt to shake it; touch.

12-19-2007 = NOA2 by e-mail & web, dated 12-18-07 (187 days; 201 per VJ); in mail 12/24/07.

01-09-2008 = File from USCIS to NVC, 1-4-08; NVC creates file, 1/15/08; to consulate 1/16/08.

01-23-2008 = Consulate gets file; outdated Packet 4 mailed to fiancee 1/27/08; rec'd 3/3/08.

04-29-2008 = Fiancee's 4-min. consular interview, 8:30 a.m.; much evidence brought but not allowed to be presented (consul: "More proof! Second interview! Bring your fiance!").

05-05-2008 = Infuriating $12 call to non-English-speaking consulate appointment-setter.

05-06-2008 = Better $12 call to English-speaker; "joint" interview date 6/30/08 (my selection).

06-30-2008 = Stokes Interrogations w/Ecuadorian (not USC); "wait 2 weeks; we'll mail her."

07-2008 = Daily calls to DOS: "currently processing"; 8/05 = Phoned consulate, got Section Chief; wrote him.

08-07-08 = E-mail from consulate, promising to issue visa "as soon as we get her passport" (on 8/12, per DHL).

08-27-08 = Phoned consulate (they "couldn't find" our file); visa DHL'd 8/28; in hand 9/1; through POE on 10/9 with NO hassles(!).

I have about 8 left. They taste the same as they always did, but they are getting hard to chew. Still, I hate to waste them. When stuff get's close to expiring it's usually because the kids were eating a ton of something (like cereal bars) and then they just stop and never eat them again.

Maybe it's because it's just two of us, but I don't buy more than I need for a few days at a time. I tend to eat vegetarian M-F (don't worry, I make Al meat when he wants it), so I shop throughout the week for fresh veggies, tofu, tempeh, etc. I keep the cupboards stocked with basics like pasta and couscous and rice, I have a decent spice rack and always have a wide variety of fats (oils and butter, sometimes bacon fat or other drippings) and vinegars. I basically have it set up that during the week all I need to think of are vegetables and the occasional piece of meat. I bake my own bread whenever I can. I think there's only one thing in my cabinet older than a month (panko breadcrumbs), except for all the crisps Alex made me buy at Christmas that we are still working our way through.

I am aware that since I'm essentially a homemaker right now, I have the luxury of doing this. Not sure what it will be like if I decide to go back to work -- even in my last job, I wasn't 40 hours a week so I had plenty of time to shop and cook. I do remember that when it was just me and I was working full time, I ate a lot of takeout. I really don't want to go back to that.

Even back when I was young and single, I always bought extra of everything when there was a sale. I never ran out of anything at home, and I would have to be careful not to buy too much. My wife on the other hand, to this day will still come back from the store with 2 apples and 2 bananas, even though as a family, we probably eat 4 of each every day. I'm trying to get her now to get more and not have to be running to the store every day, which is just something she always did.

I think it's just an individual thing. I came from a large family and we always ran out of something if we didn't stock up. My wife grew up living in a small apartment with no fridge and a shared kitchen, so you really couldn't buy too many things. Sometimes it just old habits that are hard to change.
