"Soup", before I lived in Russia I think I tried soup two or three times, in Russia-it's a "main dish", almost every meal

I hate soup. Always have.

I'm really concerned that when someone says something like "It is this or that way in Russia", other people who have no idea will think that it's indeed true, and that it's true for every single person in my country. I know people share their experiences in this thread, and they have good intentions, but generalizations somewhat bother me.

Soup = :dead:

:)

MY apologies, I should have stated, "according to my experiences"; I agree it is an over generalization

No need to apologize :) But I really hate soup :D

An observation on Russian women: During my visit I was severely tempted to take photos of russian women in "every-day wear" for the benefit of my teenage daughter just to show the contrast between what Russian women wear to go shopping and their USA counterparts. However, I could not think of a discreet way of taking candid "walking on the streets" shots without looking like a pervert or worse. I guess my daughter will have to rely on my descriptions although actual photos would have been much more convincing. ;)

Good luck trying to convince a teenage daughter of anything.

This is actually a cultural similarity - There is a Russian "Married with Children."

The wife and I have recently been sitting around (since it's too hot to move!) watching TV and just about every day we watch "The King of Queens" followed by "Married with Children." She told me "In Russia we have this show too." I pictured Al with a horrible voice over and Kelly with a nice sultry accent, but I was surprised to see, they're a real Russian Bundy family.

The show is very well done with a "Russianized" character based on each character in the American sitcom. After seeing a few clips I realized, there's no cultural differences that can't be bridged if we can all enjoy quality entertainment like this.

I have seen a couple other shows where they did the same, in Poland they do it as well. For instance "The Nanny" has both a Polish and Russian version :) I can't remember the others now...maybe someone else does...In Poland they also made a version of "I Love Lucy" Which I think is pretty funny :)

If shows are completely redone and not just dubbed its cool. But when they dub American movies and sitcoms, I think half the humor dies with it. The monotone voices just can't replace the real actors voices I am used to hearing in the US.

I agree that Russian versions of American shows are more modest. I am now working in Moscow office of Sony Pictures and we are working on a script for a new TV show and my american collegue keeps inserting sexy scenes into the script which is always confronted by russian script writers. But I must say that "married with children" was a great success in Russia and still is though it has a lot of dirty stuff in it. I think it's actually the first show of this kind that appeared on Russian TV

I saw this in July when I was there. It is like some alter-universe Bundy family!

I agree with this completely, and in case it wasn't clear I was talking about the shows that are redone :) I don't like dubbing, at all! So annoying...

It was the first show of this kind that appeared on American TV as well. When FOX debuted, the whole network was full of "trashy shows" like this. Now, look at shows on the big three during prime time, they're not much different. Desperate Housewives, Las Vegas, etc. Married with children was 15 years ahead of it's time!

I don't wish to break topic here, but I just wanted point out that this was Sasha's first post! Yay! (L)

Slim, you're right. it was the first show of its kind. It also got loads of attention from the FCC. In its first season Fox was fined a few times for its content.

Welcome Sasha!

The FCC reminds me a little of the MPAA. Regulating morality, ha!
