I haven't decided yet if I will use a midwife or OB. Do you think I should consider the implications for immigration of birthing with a midwife? thanks so much. I don't know where else to find information on this.

Do what you think is best for you and your baby. It will not affect your daughter's status. If if there would be doubts about her birth certificate (but there won't!), you will have plenty of evidence to show that you have been in the US for a while.

After your baby is born the hospital or midwife will have the mother fill out a form that looks something like this.

Different states will have different forms but this is pretty standard. Make sure you fill out the form with the exact same name in your passport. The hospital or midwife will send the form to the county vital record office. In a few weeks you can go pick up the birth certificates make sure to get extra certified copies. Then you can apply for your child’s SSN after you get the birth certificates.

Congrats on the baby!

No problem. Don’t worry the hospital/midwife will guide you through the process. 99% of first time moms who have never stepped foot out of the US have no idea how the birth certificate process works until baby is born. You will get paperwork and detailed instructions about where to go and what to do. If you choose to have your baby in a hospital or birthing facility (they are cheaper) I would go visit before your baby is born. Normally hospitals and birthing facilities have classes for moms where you can preregister, they will give you a tour and tell you what to expect, where your partner should park, etc. Go! You do not want to navigate through a hospital for the first time while in labor.

I wouldn't be too worried...it's very isolated cases with specific midwives (and one that I can think of it was the widwife's spouse doing it). It's not like they're suspicious of midwives in general....just the ones where they have been found to have been committing fraud.

Midwifes are fine... however,  if there is any complications, the midwife calls up a doctor or hospital that she has affiliations with, and then calls for transportation, or a doctor has to visit the house.  Either way, things could go wrong.  Rare, but it happens.  Best of luck to the OP!

A child born inside the US is a citizen, near the border or not.

After Texas midwifes committed fraud the birth certificates from the southern border region can't necessarily be trusted:

One other point. Check into dual citizenship if that is something you're interested in for your child. All countries are different when it comes to it, but some children are automatically citizens of a country that there parents are.
