The Chinese were not "telling people to stay at home." They were welded all but one door shut to apartment buildings and put guards at the one remaining door, only letting one person per household out, once every three days. Telling people to stay at home did occur, however, when there were no room left in the hospitals.

 

Why the media is soft-pedaling this is a mystery to me. It's almost as if they want an enormous health-care crisis just as a presidential election is occurring, for some reason.

 

  I don't know that it will be better here. We have people showing up for work with fevers and coughs, taking all kinds of medicine because they are worried about job security if they call in sick. We even have people describing themselves as great workers for never calling in sick. Unfortunately they should be instead of making everyone else sick. Many people won't stock up on food and supplies, then they'll have to be out at the grocery store coughing all over everyone. Culturally we are not set up to deal with this kind of scenario well. 

 

  The best I hope for right now is they will close schools locally if the situation warrants. I'm not even sure they will do that until it's too late.

Yes I understand about people coming in work sick because they are worried about their job.  I used to do that because my boss told me if you call in sick you will be recommended for a transfer or termination.  You will not be staying in my business.  I would come in sick with a fever and cough.  Then one day I decided this is ridiculous and I quit.  So I understand people's very real fear of losing their job.

Last week at the grocer.... people were still working sick, coughing all over everything they were checking out. Was so annoyed.. but I understand you don't work you don't get paid. Have to say that my sister is one of those people that never missed a day due to sickness, work is too important and she has to keep going. She has patients coming in asking if they have a supply of masks now. O_o

  One of the reasons they made the flu vaccine mandatory for health care workers is because otherwise we tend to show up for work sick anyway and spread it to patients and co-workers. It's the same reason you gave though. I've had a few times I wanted to call in but didn't. Even if I am not worried about my job, I will run out of vacation time. It would be better if the work environment was more conducive to people staying home when they are sick.

    Years ago when we had separate sick and vacation banks, people tended to call in when they were sick. Now that it's pooled, people tend to want to save their vacation time and not use it to stay home when they feel terrible. It's not good as far as spreading the illness around to others, and I'm not sure it's a great idea for our own health to be dragging ourselves into the work environment when we should be getting rest. I think it's why once people get sick, they tend to get multiple respiratory illnesses in a given year. They just don't give themselves time to recover from the first one.

I would hope that since he does like to hire ''the best people" he and whomever is up there in charge, try harder. Seems like someone dropped the ball.. and that ball has real consequences. We need to point out incompetence when we see it, otherwise how will mistakes be corrected?

Personally, I'm of the opinion this will blow over in a few weeks. The trend already seems(to me) to be towards containment. The daily increase in new cases is slowing down now outside of china as well as within china(not necessarily trusting them, but like I said even in Italy and S Korea etc). The number of recovered every day is 2-3 times the number of new cases. Honestly, I think the panic is way misplaced.
