I made an appointment today for Thursday. That's the fastest I have ever been able to see my doctor. They did have a recorded disclaimer that anyone with respiratory symptoms had to let them know when scheduling the appointment or they may not be able to see them. Not a bad idea so they can have precautions in place ahead of time.

Hopefully no one coughs on me.

My doctors all have masks and hand sanitizer at the windows but they have all stopped shaking hands. They are also very responsive to emails so the doctor checked in on me regularly when I had the fever. Now when I went to a lab the other day most of the workers there were wearing masks, which probably does nothing, but gave me a strange sort of psychological comfort.

Back in early Feb I had to do four days of being in an MRI. So while I'm sitting there waiting I hear techs discussing how sick they were and how severe a cough they have. The other tech asks why on earth they didn't wear a mask or call out... got to tell you it did not make me happy having this tech touching me. So there are two facilities with machines within a block radius, and the next day I get a call from the other facility saying they had to move my appointment to a different building because now everyone was sick and they had to close it for 'cleaning'.

The title of the article says insurance companies will waive treatment fees, but the content says they are waiving coronavirus testing copay's (which means nothing as testing is currently already free) and extending coverage for treatment, which also really means nothing. Curious to see what insurance companies come up with.

I would like them to be more specific about what they are waiving, covering and extending. Vague policy coverage statements already cause enough problems for people.

My insurer states they will cover all copays, coinsurance, and deductibles for the test. I'm not exactly sure what they mean by this, I'm assuming if it was a test run by Labcorp or Quest they would waive the copay, which is pittance for me anyway. If I had to go to an ER for treatment I'm assuming my ER copay would still apply and they'd be paying for the rest.

I guess that's what it means, so that they will cover it when private labs start doing the testing. I thought too, ER visits and treatment will still be subject to the regular deductibles and copays.

They are just starting drive through testing here in Colorado. You just need the doctors order. The smart thing would be if doctors start doing telemed screenings and then ordering the test so people can go to the drive through, and then tell people to go to the ER if symptoms worsen. That would minimize spread and keep costs down, but still enable people who need treatment to know when to go to ER.

In my visit to the clinic last week there was a triage at entrance to determine the risks of the client entering the building and the best mitigation steps. I needed none but it was nice to see.

My new doc had a form to fill out, asking three simple questions.  Trouble is, I was in the clinic for about 20 minutes before I got the form.  NOT very effective overall.

TRUMP’S TOP CORONAVIRUS EXPERT: THE PRESIDENT IS FULL OF SH++

According to Dr. Anthony Fauci, nearly everything the president has said about the coronavirus is wrong.

Speaking to lawmakers on Capitol Hill, Dr. Anthony Fauci, the director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, noted that attempts to downplay how lethal the disease is by comparing it to the flu—which the president did just two days ago—are wildly misguided. “I mean, people always say, ‘Well, the flu does this, the flu does that,’” Fauci said. “The flu has a mortality of 0.1%. This has a mortality of 10 times that. That’s the reason I want to emphasize we have to stay ahead of the game in preventing this.”

The swine flu of 2009/10 killed an estimated 400-500,000 people.  covid-19 is up to what, 4,630 people tonight?  I realize it is not yet over, but China is closing it's adhoc hospitals after less than 2 months with the disease.  I don't see this getting anywhere NEAR the death rate of the swine flu, personally.

So it's not as bad as the swine flu. Well this will be all over by April then, like a miracle.

I'd say more like late April.  It's almost over in China, and it started late December.  You're pretty close on the timeline me thinks.

I guess I mis-underestimated the capacity of some to recognize the sarcasm in applying the President's previous statements.

It is arithmetically impossible to have this outbreak wrapped up this spring, and a year from now we will still be on a healthcare crisis footing and the vaccine will likely be months off.

Then why is China closing all their temporary hospitals like they have it under control?

”healthcare crisis footing”... did you read that somewhere, or come up with it on your own?  The economy and financial markets will be suffering later this year, I agree.  But not the medical community.

On COVID-19:

“I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepatitis,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.

I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quantities of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and suspicion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.

I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even
imagine?

I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.

But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, suspicious, reactionary and self-interested.

Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" attitude could prove disastrous.

I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.

Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.
Our children will thank us for it.

The first death in the US was 9 days ago, today the total is 38. There is an estimated 5.5 days incubation and 4weeks recovery. The math does not look good unless the curve can be bent.
