San Fran has declared a state of emergency.

Since that Korean Airline flight attendant was just diagnosed, I predict all air traffic from SK will be stopped soon.

The CDC seems to be putting out conflicting messages.

WHO guidance is that local health officials have capacity onhand for ventilators for the x % of patients that need it.

Already happening.  Most likely due to demand right now, but if the numbers there keep growing, I expect it to be stopped altogether soon.

I'd be interested in knowing where to get the N95s, because everywhere I've looked are out. One supplier said they could not get any more in for 6-8 weeks. I already have a supply of regular masks, but they won't do much.

They are mostly made in China, and they are obviously going through them all faster than they can be produced. My guess is if you do find any, you would have to pay the exorbitant asking price. The hospitals around here are already running out and there haven't even been any cases in this area.

Many hospitals can't even follow standard infection control protocols for regular mask use ATM because there aren't any.

Unless the WHO knows where to actually obtain these masks, that guidance is not very helpful.

If that is the case, then short-term, buy stocks in the companies that make masks.  Masks don't do a darned thing about the virus, but people feel good wearing them.

Masks are a good idea for people who are already ill with the virus. Probably the most unfortunate aspect of the shortage is that one of the best resources to minimize the spread of the virus may not be available when needed most.

They do something, but they are not a panacea.

If someone coughs in your face, it might help a little. Mostly they help people from coughing on others. The N95 are potentially better, but they require special fitting or they are no better than the cheap ones. And at best those stop only 95% while making you uncomfortable all day. You need to wash your hands thoroughly after taking the mask off. I'm wondering if they just provide a warm place for germs to grow if you wear them too long.

If you are referring to the surgical masks, they do more in the way of preventing spread when sick people wear them.  Not so much to prevent healthy people from getting sick.  They will never seal good enough to be of any value.  Plus, viruses are about 500X smaller than the mesh of the masks.

A N95 mask will provide more protection. If one could even find one nowadays, I haven’t tried since the start of this mess.

Sorry, since we were talking about N95's, my brain read that as "respirator".

The ventilators are for people who can't breathe. I imagine hospitals would want to have more on hand to accommodate the number of patients in respiratory distress. I'm not even sure how many suppliers there are though, or how easy it would be to get if hospitals don't already have them on hand. The scenario may end up being where they triage suspected patients to a central hospital (or few) that has the resources and medical staff on hand to deal with the situation.

Masks can help contain droplets from spreading if someone is already sick and coughing and sneezing. It won't stop the spread, but it can reduce it. They are of minimal value if someone is not already sick. If you are not sick and wearing one, they can't stop someone from sneezing on you.
