Coronavirus spread continues to slow

The COVID-19 outbreak in Korea appears to be slowing, with the number of new confirmed cases dropping for a third consecutive day.

According to the government’s central response team, the number of confirmed patients came to 7,478 as of 4 p.m. Monday, with 96 new cases reported in the midday tally. The government’s central response team releases the figures at midnight, and updates them again at 4 p.m.

That follows the addition of 248 new infections reported in the midnight Sunday data, which was the lowest daily increase since Feb. 26.

Daily increases have been slowing for three days in a row, with the numbers for Saturday, Friday and Thursday being 367, 483 and 518, respectively.

We are just getting to the test capacity that Korea has. It has been an effective tool in the arsenal.

I don't think Koreans are get 4 figure bills for having the testing done though. They also have better sick leave than we do, although theirs is not really the greatest either. Testing will probably be a less effective tool here because people will wait longer to get tested (or not at all) because of the associated costs for health care and missing work.

The US has a land mass 100 times the size of S. Korea, and a population about 6 times larger than S. Korea.  The density is not nearly as high here as there, so hopefully that "spread" will deter the spread of the virus.  They are also much more able to limit travel in their country, which is smaller than Florida.

The graphic timeline doesn't seem so bad.

At this point, I assume everyone will get it at some point, and most people will be OK. It seems to be too widespread to just flame out. There's the chance that if you can avoid it long enough, perhaps the vaccine will be developed and tested.

Yep.  Exposure is not an "if", rather a "when".  Do all you can to boost your immune system now, rest, and try to be healthy.  Hasn't changed much in the past 100 years.

Who is paying to test? I understand tests are free.

Edit: the CDC and State of NY don't charge, I am not sure about the provider costs.

You cannot order a test on yourself, so at the very least you are paying for a doctors office visit. You may be referred to the emergency room.  As I said earlier, in CO, they were requiring other respiratory illnesses to be ruled out first before they would do the COVID-19 test, so you are paying for those tests also. You don't pay for a COVID-19 test done by the state DOH. You will pay for all the other related costs.

The tests, as are all the virology centers,  are funded by taxpayers and are designed to protect everyone.

NOW you're cooking with Crisco!!! NOT free.  Just as the liberal promises of free college and free healthcare will NOT be free, either.  Learning is occurring.  Funded by increased taxes.  Remember that in November, as I hope everyone will.

Group opinion.  Should I stop greeting customers with a handshake.?

I am really not too concerned and do think its overblown. My wife is a little wigged about it

Still not making plans to go the Philippines any time soon

My co-workers are now incorporating the toe-bump or elbow-bump as greeting/farewell gestures.  I guess the days of grabbing them by the... are over, at least temporarily?

Are you advocating cutting the CDC and virology programs? That would be foolish and a bad investment.
