Politicians didn't want to communicate (or wanted to change), or didn't have an opinion [how would I know, I wasn't there?], on the CDC message.  No matter the opinion of politicians, I would still follow CDC/WHO before White House.  Same way I don't ask my plumber to work on my electricity.

[For reference, I am immunosuppressed and I have to travel for work - a lot.  So I am being as careful as I can, while still trying to get things done.  Unless they ground all flight and prevent all travel  like they did in China, the virus will spread - but I am not tooooo anxious about it.  Otherwise , I would drive myself crazy and stay home with the cats all year long]

Stay safe!

I agree with that, but for some reason we keep hearing news stories of the WH silencing folks like Dr. Fauci et.al.  I see him all over the news stations and it does not appear as if he is being muzzled.  Whatever, the health authorities are the best sources, and I suppose sometimes it sounds different coming from Trump or Pence, but the mainstream media needs to stop the fear mongering.

I barely watch TV, but I have not noticed fear mongering - in fact, I think they are super casual about it right now in the US and Canada.  Reminding people to wash their hands, stay home when they are sick, and monitor their condition before going to the hospital, not hoarding masks for nothing, seems like measures that should be common sense year long.  Oh well, I can dream.

I never said air traffic wasn't down ir air stocks weren't affected. What I said is if there is  specific guidance about air travel coming from the CDC, that would be very rough for airline financials.

I don't wish any economy harm, because I don't wish any people harm.   Why would I wish myself financial harm?

I didn't think you were saying that, but I had to ask.  I have literally heard people saying "I hope our economy crashes so Trump will look like an idiot", or "...so Trump will be kicked out of office", or "Blue, no matter who" (as regards voting).  Glad to know you have more sense than that.

And there HAS been guidance from the CDC about air travel, days ago.  First, it was just extra cleaning: https://www.travelandleisure.com/airlines-airports/cdc-new-airplane-cleaning-guidelines-coronavirus

Then, it was don't travel unless it is necessary: https://www.politico.com/news/2020/03/08/cdc-warns-plane-trips-cruises-coronavirus-124153

I am glad they issued guidance to avoid cruise ships. In case the previous ship quarantines hadn't sent a strong enough message. I wouldn't go on one for free right now, although they are not really my thing at the best of times.

I have no doubt there will be people out there looking for cruise deals right now. If they want to risk that, it's up to them, but they have no grounds to complain about being stuck out at sea for 14 days either.

I know.  And yet you act like it didn't exist, and that it's not already hurting airlines' financials.

Yet air travel has been cut, classes of new pilots cancelled just two days prior to starting, employees being offered partial pay to stay home, employees being asked to stay home without pay.  If this keeps up, we will see furloughs soon.

I prefer reliable sources. SCMP has shared bad information in the past.

The disclaimer is this happened in a closed environment with air conditioning. Obviously droplets will spread farther in those circumstances, which is why way before they say stay 1-2 meters away from someone with symptoms, they say avoid crowds and enclosed spaces.

I completely agree.  With this being so new and knowledge being gained practically hourly, disruption is to be expected, and someone deciding to go on a cruise without disruption is just practicing wishful thinking.

You can say that about any news source.  I am not defending SCMP, but I cannot think of any media source that doesn’t share bad information occasionally.

I don't like it as a headline. It is just another line that's going to add to the misinformation chaos. Generally 1-2 meters is a safe distance. In certain scenarios like enclosed spaces or with fans/AC, it will be more. That shouldn't be a revelation.

I'm pretty sure I could hit 10m with my sneezes (if I don't cover my mouth), but as a general rule, 1-2m is about the amount of space that you need.

We are seeing what happens when aptitude an experience is not used as a criteria for giving someone a position. It doesn't just happen in government. I see it in the private sector too. Some governments have had an excellent response to this and others are paying for not being prepared to deal with it. We are somewhere in the middle, IMO, but we didn't need to be.

CDC: Americans over 60 should 'stock up' on supplies, avoid crowds

https://thehill.com/policy/healthcare/486645-cdc-americans-over-60-should-stock-up-on-supplies-avoid-crowds?amp

Older Americans, especially those with underlying health conditions, should stockpile supplies and avoid unnecessary travel, a top official at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) said Monday.

Most Americans are likely at risk of catching the novel strain of the coronavirus, said Nancy Messonnier, director of the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases. Older Americans are especially susceptible to serious outcomes.

"As the trajectory of the outbreak continues, many people in the U.S. will at some point in time this year or next be exposed to this virus, and there's a good chance many will become sick," Messonnier said. "The reason to stock up now is to kind of stick close to home."

Messonnier said global data from Japan and South Korea show that people younger than 60 generally have better outcomes if they catch the virus.
