I go to a different club store because Costco shoppers around these parts tend to get... well testy in the parking lot. I cannot say that I sample much of anything because, germs! My husband will try anything though. Up in Lancaster there's this jam, relish, and cheese shop place. At any given time there will be hundreds of people from all over the world crammed into one area sampling from open containers. No one is watching what happens and it's a free-for-all, of hands and used toothpicks. Ugh..... can't do it.

I know people who go just for the samples. I know other stores tend to do it on weekends, which is why I try to go shopping M-F. I try to avoid any scenario where there is free stuff around. I think it's purpose is to make people a bit shop crazy. Not sure why though. Can't be more than 50 cents worth of samples?

I think I have only ever bought the sampled product one time.  Probably haven't eaten more than 5-7 nibbles myself, though I see several people going from sample station to sample station, I guess getting their "lunch" on?  Kids a lot, but adults somewhat as well.

My kids liked it when they were little, but that was really one of the reasons I started avoiding shopping when they had the samples set up. Most of the things they choose for samples is stuff I didn't really want them eating in the first place.

For clarification, bulk buying doesn't hurt anyone. Panic buying does. If people wanted 4 cases of toilet paper, they could have had that at home already. Shelves were full of TP for the last 6 months. An extra $3 a month and people wouldn't have to worry about this. Emergency situations don't always come with a heads up.

Sad.  People don't even realize just how unnecessary TP is in the bigger scheme of things.

A friend of mine who lived in Yugoslavia during the breakup used to tell us how surprised you would be at the things people regret not having once they run out. Toilet paper, soap and tooth paste were actually high on the list. Food and water first though, then medical supplies.

TP didn't even exist for centuries.  And I admit, I use a lot less than I used to, now that I have a bidet on my toilet.  I just see it as more of a luxury item, having traveled extensively in various countries, some of which don't even have it in public restrooms.

I imagine the people buying 8 packs of TP may not know what a bidet is.

I spent some time in Egypt in the late 70's and with the new US influence they were just starting to get supplies of toilet paper.  Prior to that under Soviet influence, and even then in some areas, the go to was cut up squares of newspaper.

One bachelor told me a few years ago that he goes there and eats the samples for dinner.  I have also seen this popping up in other grocery stores.  We have a 24 hr grocery here, Meijer, and I usually go around 4 am, no samples then.

My wife reminds me of the time when the former Soviet Union had almost nothing on the shelves.  She said back then, folks had money, but there was nothing to buy, then when the СССР broke up, there was a lot on the shelves, but many folks had no money, at least initially.

Newspaper???  Know what they use in Turkey and other muslim regions?  Their left hand.  The right hand is for eating and shaking.  Even if you are left handed, you NEVER proffer your left hand.
