Yes I would. But i'm not a doctor. I'd simply like people to stop conflating the two diseases. It's really not funny when people constantly say "hey don't worry you'll only likely die if you're old or immuno-compromised" well, I care for two elderly immuno-compromised and I'm immuno-compromised myself. Har har.

People only tend to worry about things when it finally effects them.

I understand your plight, as I think you know.  But really, don't you think you're more likely to be hurt by the flu than this novel virus?  I mean obviously, you'll do your best to avoid both, but the flu is MUCH more prevalent every year.

Anecdotally, and nothing to do with this discussion, my dental hygienist said she's never had the flu, and never had a flu vaccine.  I was shocked.  Upon further discussion, I found out she has never even had a fever in her life.  Late thirties or early forties.  I thought that was amazing.

I'm confident in even if the vaccinations don't work every single year 100%, they do certainly help. Can I say I currently have the flu? I don't know, but if I do, I think the vax has helped not knock me completely out. People like my parents can also receive a flu vax and one for pneumonia which can provide them some protection. My husband and sister also get one every year and they seem okay. Because of how I am, I try to avoid any illness at all - because I never know what's going to hit me hard, when I've been hit by so many stupid things before. If more people did decide to get vaccinations (and also be less selfish by happily spreading things around with no care), there'd be less community spread of a lot of things.

This is just my personal experience, and certainly doesn't necessarily apply to the world as a whole, but since I stopped getting the forced flu vaccines a few years ago, I stopped getting the flu almost every year.  And I have a handful of close friends who have had the same results.

Gonna have to disagree with Yuna here, the treatment is basically the same.  This article has a nice rundown of the similarities and differences between the two.

If you have mild symptoms and stay home, there is theoretically not much difference, however that is not really backed with a lot of clinical research yet. Superficially they are saying with mild illness, your approach would be the same.

If you develop severe symptoms there is a huge difference both in the approach and the treatment. I have had severe flu before and I've just waited it out at home. I would not even consider doing that for COVID-19. That said, there is not really a broad standard of treatment for COVID-19 yet, nor is there a great idea of which antivirals (if any) are consistently helpful. They really need a disclaimer on that page. Perhaps I just missed it. They haven't treated enough people yet to be saying how similar or different treatment for COVID-19 will be from flu with any degree of certainty.

That's nice, but if everyone did that, we would all start getting the flu frequently, just as they used to before they started vaccination. However the most likely reason you are not getting the flu is because most people are not actually spreading it around any more.

I know you are not against vaccination, but what you said is the typical rationale that anti-vaccers use. If 95% of people are getting vaccinated, the other 5% will likely be OK. That is the whole concept of "herd immunity". The 5% is not getting exposed to the disease. However if everyone took the approach of not getting vaccinated, we would be back to the 19th century as far as disease transmission goes.

While it's unlikely my exposure to sick people exceeds yours, my exposure is certainly higher than many peoples'.  I may just be lucky, or it may be that since walking away from the forced vaccinations, my personal rate of sickness is down because the anti-virals actually cause the disease, and my lack of exposure is responsible for my better health.  It's certainly hard to provide a control for the correct answer.  Or it could be that after decades of injections, I have a resistance to everything that has come about in recent years.  *shrug*

The most likely answer is that like most people in good health, your symptoms if you do get the flu are generally going to be relatively minor. Unless you test yourself every time you get a runny nose or sore throat, it's hard to say for certain that you never had the flu, just that you haven't had a case with severe symptoms. I have tested positive with just a runny nose for a symptom. Which is something to be expected if you get vaccinated.

As I've said before, most people in health care were recommended (and now required by law) to get the flu shot so they don't walk around asymptomatically and spread it to all of the people they are treating, since that is a group of people who will most likely get severe symptoms. When I was younger I didn't get the shot and usually just had minor symptoms. Until one year it took me down for a couple of weeks. Seriously slept 18 hours a day for the first week. I have not missed a flu shot since that year. Many people claim they don't get the flu bad. Until they do.

My experience, when taking the shots, was usually 2-4 days in bed, and my personal remedy (aside from the normal fluids/rest/vitamins) was fever.  Once I felt one coming on, I'd cover up with several blankets, and "burn it out" of my system.  Never did I experience more than a week of down time such as you.  That would truly suck.  Though I felt like I didn't get sick often, I'd say once a year, maybe once every two years, I had to stay in bed.    I have seen others who seemed to do this a few times per year.  Maybe I am just lucky with a strong system.

Does make me wonder though, if my occasionally mild symptoms that I attributed to a cold were actually the flu?  Never been tested for it, so don't really know.  But typically when I get what I THINK is the flu, it starts with tightening muscles in my back and neck.  If I ignore those and try to keep on with normal activities, I suffer badly.  If I honor those signs and hit the meds and beds, it typically doesn't get very bad.  The fever is key in keeping the duration short, for me.

The vaccine was either attenuated or killed virus, so it can mimic the symptoms of the flu, or more accurately you will notice similar symptoms as immune system responds to the vaccine, but without the ability to cause the severe sequelae associated with a virulent strain of wild virus.

I know people who go just for the samples. I know other stores tend to do it on weekends, which is why I try to go shopping M-F. I try to avoid any scenario where there is free stuff around. I think it's purpose is to make people a bit shop crazy. Not sure why though. Can't be more than 50 cents worth of samples?
