The level of rumours and speculation around this outbreak has been revealing and in many ways has potentially threatened people's health. Asking for reliable sources is perfectly reasonable, otherwise it's just a viewpoint with no science.

 

I am always about science....the media is way over-hyping this, in part for click bait and in part to reflect negatively on Donald Trump....it is really obvious.

  Well the reason is actually very clear. There is not going to be a rapid and/or widely available test kit to detect a virus that was discovered 2 months ago. As I posted earlier, we were give June as the ETA for this. Right now the test is going to the state DOH with a turn around time of 12 hours after they get it, and assuming they can actually get the test work, which seems to be hit or miss ATM.

I'd say a large percentage of dems want to see the market crash now, and use it as a means for ousting Trump.  Sadly for their (MAHIA) desires, I don't think the drop will be that low, nor for too long.

I understand the situation we find ourselves in today, and that with limited resources it must be triaged.

 

What I don't have a clear understanding of are the mistakes that were made in the US rollout of the kits. That is not a problem to solve today, but a clear critical eye needs to be applied.

Even today the State of NY is skeptical of the kits.

 

Going back to the Gates letter in the NEJM, the risks and opportunities are large

     I guess that's what I'm saying. I'm not sure any mistakes were made. They didn't have a magic kit sitting around waiting for coronavirus to be discovered. I'm actually surprised they have one developed already. They never even got to that point with the SARS outbreak.

 

   When you are talking about molecular PCR testing, it's not a test that anyone can do. As I said, they are still having difficulty with the test at the state DOH and I think they have been doing it for a month now. 

 

    The question I would ask is why did the CDC adhere to their initial screening criteria for so long instead of just doing the test base on symptoms. It should have been apparent earlier that the virus was probably circulating here already. I don't know that they could have rolled out the test to other sites faster than they did, but they certainly delayed diagnosis with their in house testing protocol. It probably didn't change treatment, but it may have facilitated faster spread of the virus.

I am going on the limited knowledge I have, but I was told the WHO kit did not have the same challenges.

   The negative control in the CDC kit is giving false positive results at times. Either the reagent was contaminated or they rushed the development or didn't have the resources to get it out properly in the time they had. I also think they may have overestimated how much time they had before the virus got here. I wouldn't be surprised if lack of funding will also likely be found to be a contributing factor. I don't know a whole lot about the WHO kit, but I don't believe it was ever an option for US testing. 

 

  While I don't really have an issue with the time frame they took to get the test out, I do think they need to account for the quality control issues. That shouldn't happen at that level.

Went for my regular checkup today and as I'm sitting waiting, I'm like... I feel quite more terrible than usual actually, maybe something is up with me. So far all I've got a fever, muscle aches, and headache. We joked about hoping I don't have it, but she can't actually test me so.. thinking it might be regular flu. Call back if it gets worse or develops with a cough.
