Hi all, I'm very confused with how the tax return process work. I used to be on F-1 visa and have never worked before, so I have never filed a tax return or have a SSN currently, that's why I'm applying for an ITIN right now to file married and jointly. However, I don't know which form I need to fill and what things I can claim. I graduated last year on May, can I claim tax return on the tuition that I paid for that? And can I also claim the rent money that I paid since last year? For background information, I got married in Sept 2019 and I have no income currently. Just being supported by family until I get the work permit, so I'm really confused on what form I need to fill, what I can claim or what I need to move forward with... Thanks for your help!

My timeline:

12/12/2019 - Received the 4 NOAs in the mail

12/30/2019 - Received Biometrics Appointment scheduled for 01/03/2020

01/03/2020 - Biometrics Appointment, St Paul, MN

Your spouse should be able to help you with this...

But no, rent and tuition are not tax deductible. To minimize your (joint) taxes owed, you and your spouse should file married, jointly. Since you didn't work at all, there is nothing for you to provide. The only deduction you might have (that I can think of) is medical expenses in 2019.

Removing Conditions Timeline

Aug. 10, '17: Mailed in I-751

Aug. 21, '17: NOA1

October 23, '18: NOA2- approval

October 30, 18: 10-year GC received

This is the IRS page that explains the education credits. There are links and interactive tools to see if you qualify.

Nobody can know your whole tax situation based on the little information you posted. You will need to study what the IRS says.

Medical expenses (mentioned above) is an unlikely deduction. Most go for the standard deduction they give everybody since the tax laws changed significantly in 2018.
