I am trying to find out how quick after your marriage did you apply for your spousal visa. i have received conflicting information from some VJ'ers as to filing with their non-official marriage certificate vs waiting and filing with the official one.

Which did you do?

If I dont have to wait for the official marriage certificate I sure dont want to.

Thanks!

I would just send the church one. We had no problems. We got married August 8th and I sent the packet in August 18th. You could always send the official one in later when you get it. You don't need an official copy until the interview. It won't cause a delay if it does it would only be a couple weeks compared to waiting 2 to 3 months waiting for your official copy because Jamaica is so slow. Everyone on the yardie board told me to wait but I didn't want to wait so I sent it in. If I would of listened to everyone my hubby wouldn't be sitting right by me today. He wouldn't be here probably until the end of September. That would of sucked because he is going to college in the fall. Oh and the weather is perfect!! I hope this helps go with your gut feeling. That is my 2 cents

I waited and sent in the original cert. Kimmykashi is correct the I-130 instructions states to send a copy of the original marriage cert. Since youo're going to be in JA anyway why not just have it expediated? If not it will take 2 wks so I wouldn't worry about it. Yes you can send it in and except a RFE but remember a lot of IMO have those cases on their desk for extra amt of time to get to the easier petitions. You might get a bad IMO and wait forever. To me it's not worth it unless the cert would take a while and it shouldn't.

The reason I sent my petition in later b/c I was waiting on other things besides the marriage cert.

We got married in Jamaica and used the one from the minister that we go on our wedding day - "Certified Copy of Marriage Register" to file the I-130. We had received our official marriage (the one with the seal) certificate a few months later and sent it in as the original with the DS-230 package. We had no problems doing this.

Thanks everyone! Sounds as if sending in the certificate I get the day of will not slow me down. I keep hearing people saythey did it and nothing slowed them down, no RFE's. I hear to wait but only becaus ethe form says wait, not because the process actually got slowed down. So thanks for the help everyone. We are actually marrying in a civil ceremony so I think we can get copies right away.

You can submit the one that you have now, and then just bring in the newest one from a local city registrar's office at the time of your interview.
