Was just talking about this hockey game two weeks ago with the parents of Dave Christian, a starting defense player on the 1980 USA olympic team.  They are patients of mine.  What a great family they are, and totally devoted to hockey.  Of course they are from Minnesota.  They even have grand children playing in the NHL.  The father and his brother had a business making hockey sticks.

 

There must be something in that DNA!

Very few sport events can move me to tears.. every time I watch the MoI (not films, narrations, or highlights, but the actual games, Russia and the others) its something I can't avoid.

 

The interesting thing is, one of the only other events? Having Stevie lift the second cup and giving it to Konstantinov in a wheelchair. If my dad had been alive to see that we'd have shared tears together. 

 

What they have in common is, do you think it was conceivable to Canadians or Americans you'd have a dominating Russian 5 in Detroit lifting the Stanley Cup only a decade later? The US is such a great country, you can see how diversity is literally our strength (and not in the pointless virtue signaling way you see Trudeau say it).. you can have the most bitter rivalry with Russia (the USSR), politically and in sports, then have a team like the Red Wings take in multiple Russians fleeing their countries, wind up with the Russian 5 and other Europeans (Lidstrom, Holmstrom, Sandstrom, etc.) and they team with Canadians to lead the American team (that hadn't won in half a century) to the Stanley Cup a handful of times. You can see the bond the Detroit fanbase had with people like Konstantinov, Fetisov, Kozlov, Fedorov, Larionov, which goes to show that we're far more than just our political differences. The US stands for something the world can look up to, the greatest experiment the world has seen yet, and while I've been at odds with the country's direction on a few occasions in my life, I'm definitely proud to be an American.

Another story for you from two years ago(seems we have a lot of former hockey players living here in SW Florida).

 

One of my hygienists is originally from Boston and grew up as a hockey fan.  She happened to be at the front desk when the phone rang and she answered.  A guy wanted to make an appointment for a cleaning.  She asks his name and he says "Jean Ratelle" (google him) and she says "oh, like the hockey player" and he just says "yes".  I was surprised that she knew so much about hockey, but he played for the Bruins and the Rangers.  When he arrived for his appointment it was him.  Had a great time talking about the old days of hockey.

 

Most notable was the fact he had all of his own teeth.  I was amazed, especially when you think that he played at a time when they were not wearing helmets!
