I don't hate the DMV. They have to deal with a lot of ####### and they do as good a job as anyone would, under the circumstances.

They have to deal with a lot of ####### because they're staffed by idiots.

Sorry, I don't buy that at all.

I take it you haven't lived in Florida or New York, then.

New York...where you have to wait in line for at least an hour because they are so slow...an dumb. Or Florida, where they're fast but are too dumb to change a name on a license when they put the incorrect one there on the first place.

You may not buy it, but it's a fact at every HSMV/DMV.

Not EVERY DMV. I know of at least two DMVs in my area where although a bit rude, the people working there have been helpful. We didn't have any problems in the DMV where my husband got his license- they even do verbal tests w/ translators.

My hubby was able to take the permit test and road test in one day.

And....I'm from NY and have also found DMVs that run smoothly and do not give you problems.

Depends on a lot of things...

I'm from NY and find that they're awful. Especially in the Capital Region.

The people at the HSMV/DMVs in Pinellas county are terrible. We've been there four times trying to get his license fixed. "WE CAN'T CHANGE ITTTT!" My ### you can't.

You may not buy it, but it's a fact at every HSMV/DMV.

I've had no problem at all at my local DMV - infact I've been really happy with the service I've received from them - so it's not a fact with the DMV I've been dealing with ...

Okay, HSMV on the gulf coast of FL, and all DMVs in upstate NY.

THERE!

Okay well, here's a little note coming from someone who works at a DMV. I actually work at one in Alberta Canada and let me tell you, it is a HARD job. It seems that most people are of the opinion that those of us who work at the DMV are idiots and that we don't know how to do our jobs. They also think that we are b*tches who just want to deny them service. I'm not sure how it is in each particular state, but I know up here we have different rules in each province. It's pretty darn frustrating for people moving province to province, not to mention into the country period. I do understand that.

The problem is this. The government is VERY strict about what documentation we can take, how we have to go about issuing licences and that sort of fun stuff, regardless of status. That's the tough part. I constantly have people that are upset at me because they think it's harder for them to get a licence because they're not Canadian citizens or permanent residents. In reality, it's all the same thing.

My job is not an easy one, that's for sure. I have my share of people literally yelling at me and calling me an f'in b*tch pretty much every day. Talk about what that will do to your self esteem and your stress level.

I'm not trying to sound preachy or ask you to feel sorry for me, or anyone else working at a DMV for that matter. I just guess I'd like to say that sometimes even though we seem to be unreasonable, it's usually because there are some stupid government rules behind it and it's out of our hands.

I can't tell you how often I feel badly when I've got to turn people away. It makes me feel sick. I'm so sorry that this happened to your husband Autumn. At least here you only have to wait one day if you fail. ~sighs~ Such retarded stuff really.

To tell the truth, I'm a little worried about having to go through the whole process myself when I get to Idaho. I guess the only thing I can do is read up on their policy and try to have absolutely everything that I can, that they might need. Sounds silly maybe, but I know for me, people will bring stacks of paperwork and I will usually be able to weed through it and find something that will work for me and in the end work for them.

If you go to the DMV and get a cranky lady or gentleman, try smiling at them, sometimes it helps to see a friendly face! :)

Wow. That's crazy, AutumnChick.

I know at the DMV I went to here in FL, their "expert" kept insisting that I needed to show her my I-130. What the heck?!!! Much discussion ensues as I explain the difference between a K-1 Fiancée visa and a petition for an alien relative. Here is the visa in my passport (which you scanned the last time I was here.... why isn't that showing up?). They tell me they won't issue a license without an I-485 AOS receipt notice then. I point to it in their hands and tell them they're holding it. (Very pleasantly, though. I'm no fool.) The "expert" insists that "That's a biometrics appointment letter and is no good". Luckily, I had brought my biometrics appointment letter in case of encounters with "experts". I show them the biometrics letter so they can see the difference. Well, now they don't want to put it in my married name, or change my FL Resident ID to my married name because they need a receipt for an official name change. What?!!! Here is my SSN, my I-485 receipt notice, my marriage certificate.... ALL IN MY MARRIED NAME. I'm pretty sure we're good to go here.

Following one hour of discussion and processing I was finally issued my DL and ID in my married name. Needless to say, I am not looking forward to going back to register my car.

Oh, my aching head.

  • 2 weeks later...

Here's an update: the 10 day waiting period was up today, and my husband got his driver's license. The examiner who tested him today had just got back from Vancouver, so they chatted about that!!! He also told my hubby that, if it had been him 10 days ago, he would have allowed him to drive out of the parking lot and then back in and would have passed him. Said that the windshield crack/fail rule is at the discretion of each DMV employee.

Finally he can leave our house on his own!!!!! Woo hoo :)

I would not say I hate DMV (called BMV here) but we did have a slight problem with one of the branches. We went there for me to take the written test for Learner's permit (surprise, surprise they do not accept foreign licenses) and the lady there could not read our International Marriage Certificate (all nice and apostilled and in 10-15 different languages - all she had to do is go by the number of line to find out what it read).

Enough with that branch, next week we went to another branch where a very nice and helpful employee dealt with our case and in under an hour I had my LP good for one year.

What they asked about being full of partial donor made me wonder - how does the partial donor sign show up on the DL? half a heart? Serious question here.

Glad it turned out well autumn!! Some people are sticklers for the rules, he is prob the one that sits alone at coffee break, lol Cheers

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
