Who HATES the DMV???

That would be me (and the hubby too of course). Well, he went to take his test today for his driver's license. Because he is a non-citizen, he could not go to one of the handy substations that are near where we live; he had to go to the state capitol, about 1 1/2 hours away. Appointments are first come, first serve. I have no vacation days left at work at all (used too many traveling to Canada this year during the immigration process). My dad planned on coming to visit us for Father's Day (he lives 5 hours away) and offered to take my husband to the DMV today.

I called to make sure that my husband could take the test in my father's vehicle since it was not registered in this state. We were told that it was fine, as long as we could prove it was registered and had been inspected in my father's state. By the way, my father is now driving my old Honda Civic, which I gave to him when I got a new car. My hubby used to drive the Civic all the time and felt more comfortable taking the road test in that, rather than in my Nissan Xterra, which he has rarely driven. Made sense to me.

So, off they went today, arrived early this morning, took the written and vision tests (passed) and then waited for 5 hours to take the road test. When they got in the car, my husband started to pull out of the parking lot when the examiner told him he would have to turn around because she just noticed a crack on the bottom of the windshield and they could not continue the test. So, he turned around, went back to the DMV, where she told him that, because she had gotten in the car, he was not eligible to retake the test for 10 days! #######!!!!!

My rants: 1. The car actually had the windshield crack when I owned it and it passed inspection in this state as well as passed inspection in my dad's state.

2. Okay fine whatever, I am okay with her refusing to continue the test due to that, but why oh why can't he take the test again for 10 more days? That is typically what happens if you FAIL the test, but he didn't fail. He was just unable to take it due to his vehicle.

I know 10 days does not sound like a big deal, and the reality is, we WILL find a way, but damn it sucked big time today! If they would have let him retake the test anytime, my dad could bring him tomorrow. ARGH!!!

It really is funny how different they can be. The DMV in NH would not allow him to get a license until he had his EAD or green card; a K-1 visa would not suffice. Since moving here, it does seem like NH is stricter/more rigid on a lot of things, not just the DMV. And the motto is "Live Free or Die"!!! Go figure :)

My husband just told me that 5 or 6 people (out of 8) failed their driving tests with this examiner (he was watching and counting while he was waiting for his own test). Seems like too high a number to me. Maybe she was just having a bad day :(

This is really weird. I am so sorry it all happened to you :( It's really retarded that they won't let him take the test because of the crack in the windshield. They should have seen the truck I took my driving test in - it was literally falling apart! The driver's door didn't open, transmission wasn't working right, and the brakes sucked. But the DMV examiner didn't care.

I can't complain about the CA DMV - they've been great to me all the way, and I consider them the most efficient government organization among those that I've had to deal with in the U.S.

I don't hate the DMV. They have to deal with a lot of ####### and they do as good a job as anyone would, under the circumstances.

Autumnchik, aren't you in CT? I thought you were. When did you move to NH? Under Connecticut law, Canadian drivers are treated like out-of-state drivers. Check here:

http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=805&a...r=|28069|#28073

and here, under the exceptions to being a Non-Citizen Driver:

http://www.ct.gov/dmv/cwp/view.asp?a=805&a...r=|28069|#31252

* A valid license from Canada, Germany or France is the same as an out of state license.

Note: Your out of country license does not have to be surrendered once you have successfully obtained your Connecticut driver's license.

I take it you haven't lived in Florida or New York, then.

New York...where you have to wait in line for at least an hour because they are so slow...an dumb. Or Florida, where they're fast but are too dumb to change a name on a license when they put the incorrect one there on the first place.

You may not buy it, but it's a fact at every HSMV/DMV.

Not EVERY DMV. I know of at least two DMVs in my area where although a bit rude, the people working there have been helpful. We didn't have any problems in the DMV where my husband got his license- they even do verbal tests w/ translators.

My hubby was able to take the permit test and road test in one day.

And....I'm from NY and have also found DMVs that run smoothly and do not give you problems.

Depends on a lot of things...

I've had no problem at all at my local DMV - infact I've been really happy with the service I've received from them - so it's not a fact with the DMV I've been dealing with ...

Sorry to hear it didnt go well!!!

Not trying to derail this topic, but not all govt employees are idiots, i would think the vast majority are not!! Not sure why people have to make this negative posts! Every organization/country has incompetent people! maybe she was haing a bad day, who knows!!

Hope this gets sorted out soon Autumn.

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1
