SSN number and EAD card

I received my EAD card last week, and for some reason i assumed it would include my SSN number, but it doesnt. I went to the social security office and applied, they told me it would take 6 to 10 weeks. Does this mean i cannot start work ? even with an EAD ? Do i have to wait for my SSN number before i can apply/accept job offers ?

Why cant the government institutions combine ? and give a SSN with the EAD ? i guess that would be far to easy

You can work without a SS number, but you should have some notification from the SS office that you have applied for a number, and supply it to your employer as soon as possible.

A lot of employers sadly are under the impression that you need a SS card to work, which is not true, but you may find some employers have issues with you not having a SS card.

Well that sounds re-assuring, but what happens with regards to the taxes i claim ? any monies i earn would have to be paid to me tax free ? and i would have to record that and claim them in my tax return ?

I believe when I was in your position, my employer withheld my taxes. By the time you file your taxes, you will have a SS card.

Phew, thank God my husband was able to get his SSN after only 8 days in the country.

6-10 weeks sounds strange. If you applied at a local Social Security Administration office and were approved, the delivery of the actual card should be fairly soon.

If you look at the Social Security Administration website, you'll find my two favorite paragraphs of all government. The first insists that you must have a SSN for employment; the second explains what to do "if one of my employees doesn't have an SSN." My take: apply for it, go ahead and work, and fill in the # as soon as you get it.

When C. applied for his last week, they told him that if he started working to give the receipt from the application to his employer and fill in the SSN when it arrived. He called work, told them he was good to go, and as luck had it, his SS card arrived yesterday (five business days!) in the mail. But we would have had him show that he applied for it along with his EAD, and just updated the records later.
