I realize it is more common now than in years past, but it's still quite rare. A 2h wait in JFK is not that unusual by any means (and has been that way for a while), and they are not regularly going through phones of most people.

Usually they go through phones in secondary inspection.

All I know is what my husband told me. I asked him if he felt was being singled out and he said no, there were so many different types of passengers in there with him and the CBP kept calling people up questioning them (which I know is normal) and requesting to see their personal mobile devices. Young, old, man, woman, everyone was having to do it. Perhaps it's not something that happens frequently, but I am seeing and hearing about it more often.

It's not so rare nowadays. When my husband came through JFK as his POE in October last year, it took over 2 hours of getting through immigration because he said they had more than 20 people in there that they were going through all of their phones. The phones had to password unlocked and they read through messages on all of social websites including text messages AND looked through photos as well. Guess it's going to be the "norm" for a while.

Did he come on a tourist visa or immigrant visa ?

It may have looked random to your husband but he doesn’t have access to all the info that CBP does on travelers. There may well have been some common themes (country of origin, US travel history, relatives in US as noted on visa forms, type of visa etc) that are not obvious to your husband just from looking at someone.

Back to this thread in particular, this is certainly not the first time we’ve seen F1 students here post about getting caught out about working illegally via a phone check at PoE, so something is working properly anyway.

It’s totally not beside the point! It is a condition of the visa. They have every right to revoke a visa if the visa holder does not abide by the terms of the visa.

Are you a researcher or an academic? If you were only helping your friend out as you argue and was not compensated in any way, i say fight this. To be accepted to American academies is a privilege that many people here could not even dream of. If you were really helping and not violating your visa , get a lawyer and fight this legally.

I was on F1 for many years, never heard of anything like this before. I never had any problems on the border or POE. Never worked unauthorized in any way, but that's besides the point. This is new and very unwelcoming for distinguished international students, who contribute so much to the American academic establishments, publishing and research.

I don't get what makes people so  cheery to hear such treatment.

Useless to fight this...I know of no appeal...Work is not defined as having received pay.........He was suspected of working without authorization..........They only need suspicion.....his visa was properly revoked, imo.

No, the entire thread is here..........OP attempted to re-enter the country via an F-1 visa......CBP, at the border, looked through his phone, and they found evidence he had been working......and they correctly revoked his F-1 for unauthorized work......

I suspect the reference was made to the disappearance of posts where OP must have said he waited in line for hours only to be profiled and then denied entry for unpaid work, given that another poster is arguing unfair treatment strenuously on all those counts ;)  ...(yet OP himself doesn’t have any posts saying any of that)

Yep

Many references made (cellphone check, work proof found) were not posted by the OP so there are posts that were obviously removed

OP did actually post that they found evidence of his working on his phone:

Was on F1 Student Visa. Was helping a friend at his business for few days and there were records of it on Phone which was checked by CBP at Chicago Airport while returning. Student Visa cant have employement during studies, so I guess they revoked visa.

It's his second post in this thread.
