I started watching Harry & Meghan today on Netflix, half out of curiosity, half out of a close friend demanding I watch it so we can talk about it. I am 1.5 eps in, and while it's fairly cringe, it's not completely awful. I 100% get that they have a narrative to sell, but at the same time I do appreciate getting the other side of various stories about them. I take it all with a grain of salt. But it's very, very clear that the press intrusion in Harry's life before, during and after his mother's funeral has made him see any criticism of his wife and his marriage as a hounding to the gates of hell. It's a trauma response, in my opinion, and he probably hasn't had enough therapy to cope with it. He's clearly a sensitive guy brought up in a dysfunctional family where emotions were meant to be suppressed at all costs. He meets a woman who hasn't been brought up that way, and he's attracted to the idea of living "free" -- but he can never be free by dint of who he was born. 

 

They're also pretty clearly nuts about each other, and it's kind of gross.  I say this as someone who also is totally nuts about my husband, and vice versa, and our friends make fake gagging noises around us when we get all moony and soppy over each other. I get it, and as they say, game recognize game.  I don't see the "she's controlling him" thing at all -- he is clear, forthright and angry, whether the anger is well-placed or not, and if anything she seems to give way to him a little so far in their joint interviews. I reserve the right to change this as I work my way through though!

 

I'm not a fan of either one of them. They're overprivileged people who have lost sight of how lucky they truly have it. I try never, ever to forget that I am insulated from a lot of the bad stuff of the world through money and a safety net of family and a fantastic spouse -- and I am nowhere near as well off as these two. If they really want to be shot of the Royal Family, they should stop making these "woe is we" shows and live a quiet life of luxury, completely out of the public eye. But they're gluttons for attention, both of them -- and if they stop, how will they be able to afford their super-luxurious lives? 🙄

I know, I was bored.  I do love the contradictory message from Megan and Harry, ‘we want to be left alone, but make sure you follow us, make us money, and heed our influence’.

I have watched this and it was quite the topic of discussion this Christmas. It's not nearly as sensational as the media hype machine (you'd have thought Harry had offed the entire royal family and pooped on Winston Churchill's grave or something) claimed. Clear that he's incredibly bitter and protective of his family, he's grown up in dysfunction and abuse, and he's trying to get control over the narrative of his life, which is not too strangely different from other royals in the past. It is also clear they are very much in love with each other, and I found that whole thing to be touching enough. Always bothersome why people get so offended about people in love. I have known my husband twenty years or so, have been married quite some time now, and we still love each other deeply. I remember people always bitterly talking about a 'honeymoon phase' and that eventually somehow all married couples settle into boredom and hatred or that showing affection is gross. I suppose I can see that with my own parents sure, but I know so many of my own generation that are happy and content with their spouses. They aren't afraid to love or show it. We've only got one life to live, afterall. I'm happy for the two of them. I've got a lot of theories about what Harry is really angry about... but it seems it's all to do with the brother and his father. I've heard the rumours over the years.

FWIW, I have read the book and it's nothing like the press has made it out to be. Honestly? One of the best books I've read in a while, from a very good ghostwriter. And I've loaned it out to family members that are interested. There is lengthy stuff about his time in the military, a lot about his upbringing, and of course trauma. There is a section on his relationship and marriage to his wife which I found just as nice as the documentary really. I am happy that he's happy. For those that aren't thrilled about the monarchy in the first place it will be an eye-opener. Pro-monarchists will be upset, but well, if that is the sort of people you're happy with having as a ruler... *shrug* Still, he makes no claims or insults against his grandparents, and it's clear where his grievances lay. I imagine there will be more books in the future, based upon how successful he has been.

One of the many things I am most proud of is that I never cared about someone's celebrity status. Even if it is someone has actual talent or a backstory that I could appreciate, I never got into the being a "fan" of that person. The best stories come from the people around you in your everyday life, not from obnoxious morons the media force-feeds you. There are far more interesting people/stories here on VisaJourney.

I do love the power play these two grifters are doing to Jeremy Clarkson.  It will be interesting to see how this plays out as even though Clarkson is a pompous a—, he is very entertaining.
