Getting A Social Security Number

My husband just received his green card in the mail (K1  AOS). When we applied, we checked the box saying we want to apply for a social security number for him. His EAD/AP card was not approved in time, so we never received it. I know that's when a lot of people get their social security card. When will he get his? Do we need to go over to the social security office or will they automatically send him once since we asked for it when we applied?

Thanks!

I also applied for one with my EAD and while my EAD did arrive I decided to go to the SSA since I highly doubted that I would get one (we changed address 2 times in the process) and turns out that they had nothing in their system regarding any SSN for me, so I gave the nice lady my EAD and birth certificate (I had more stuff but she didn't need any), she put some stuff in the computer and in a matter of 10 minutes everything went smoothly and she said my SSN would arrive in the mail in about a week.

Since you received your Greencard before your EAD I highly recommend just going to the SSA and applying right for one right there.

Thanks! We've been considering that but we wanted to make sure it wasn't going to come later and mess us up

The SSN applied for on your I765 comes from SSA headquarters in Maryland. Your local office would have no record of it's production had you not left enough time inbetween receiving your EAD and SSA Headquarters actually beginning to produce it.

I would have said in the DOS form that I require a ssn, and the address to send it to. I was told I would recieve my ssn card and number in the mail 2 weeks after arrival into the US. We have been here for over a month and nothing. I called the ssa they have nothing in their system for me. I tried to follow up with my embassy, no response. What do I do now? Will it ever come?

Oh...

Does that mean that I'll be one of those cases where I'll get a duplicate SSN then... 😬?

Just FYI: he ended up going to the social security office and talking to them and they're sending a card via mail. Should be here in 2 weeks.
