Hello. I haven't been able to find anything regarding this.

On the I-485, part 3:

Place of Last Entry Into the United States (City/State)

I flew in from Montreal, Canada and had to go through customs there.

I had a connection in Denver before arriving in Sacramento, California

What would be the last entry into the united states? The customs in Montreal, the connection in Denver or my actual arrival in Sacramento?

Unless Canada is somehow different from other countries, your entry point is the first place in the U.S> where you landed and went through the immigration. You must have done it in Denver.

Don't you get inspected by US immigration and customs at Montreal Airport and then fly to the USA? I seem to remember some places have this backwards way.

Canada has immigration pre-clearance at most (maybe all) of the major airports that fly to the U.S. That's where we clear immigration prior to boarding the plane.

I would think it would be Montreal since that's where CBP collected and "activated" your K1. But don't quote me on that. Hopefully another canuck who flew into the U.S. will know the answer. What does your K1 DHS stamp in your passport say? Should say Montreal right?

I don't know what the correct answer is. My gut says it is the first US city that your plane lands in, then again maybe Montreal is considered a POE. You may want to try posting this in the Canada forum.

Mmm, but if it's where you clear immigration (they have that pre-clearance thing in Dublin, too, I don't know where else...), then maybe it's where you're considered to have been admitted to the US....? Tricky.

Ah yes, but by being admitted by US immigration, you are legally present in the USA are you not? Despite the fact you haven't actually left Canadian soil? Much like the US embassy in London is officially "America".

Of course Montreal is not in the U.S.

The confusion is because Canadians flying from Canada go through U.S. immigration in Canada. The stamp that CBP gives out says "Department of Homeland Security" with the city of admittance on it. For example, at the Toronto airport, it will say "TOR" on the DHS admittance stamp. Technically Montreal isn't a "U.S. Entry" as far as being on American soil, but that is where the OP cleared U.S. immigration and was where they were granted admittance to the U.S.

Where did immigration check your documents? If it was Denver, i would say denver ... if it was Sacramento, I'd put that. You say you went through customs in Canada but customs is different than immigration. Customs is where they inspect your bags and stuff in relation to the customs form you filled out.

This lengthy discussion is interesting, but of little significance. I personally would put Denver, the first place in the US where you touched US soil, even though you were inspected in Montreal.

Whatever you write, if the immigration officer who reviews your application for adjustment doesn't agree they will correct it.
