Can a K3 SPOUSE get a social security card before the AOS and EAD are approved? And how soon after filing for the EAD can he/she legally work?

Regarding the SS#, I've been down to the SS office a number of times at this point, so from the understanding I have, you can only get a SS# if you have permission to work. The SS office doesn't give out the number for non-work reasons except for "very special circumstances". I have not been able to locate a list of what these circumstances might be. We were able to get a SS# with the K1 visa that was stamped EAD when we arrived at JFK, but as K-3's are not eligible for the EAD stamp on arrival, from my understanding, you'll have to wait for the EAD to be approved. Once your EAD is approved however, you can apply at the office and you'll have a card in hand in 2 weeks.

The I485 asks for a social security #. I believe the correct answer for my case is NONE. Wendy just got here under a week ago, we haven't applied for a SSN yet. And I believe they will not issue one until she receives EAD. Any how we want to send the I485 before the price hike.

Finally, my question. Will writing "none" for ssn question be a problem?

That's the number I'm using as it appears to be the only pre-printed number on the ticket. The only other number on our I-94s is the hand-written Alien number on Lorena's copy.

If you or someone else finds something different, please let me know before this Thursday. That's when I'm assembling the final AOS package to send in.

That is what I figured it was. Hope someone else can verify this for us as well. Seems like a dumb question, but never can be to sure about things in this process.

I agree about the I-94 number. I did make a mistake with my own application. I put the control number instead of the correct 'red' visa number but I'm not concerned since a photo copy of the passport, visa and I-94 are included in the package. Though we always want the packages to be accurate, these number are common mistakes and the reviewer has the photo copies to refer too.

I'd use the A# printed on the I-94. It should match the A# on the NOA2 from way back when in your approval notice for your initial petitions for your primary beneficiaries. As per the SSN issue, I will have to check b/c I know there are work-ineligible SSNs given out to folks legally in the states. Either way, we have already calculated the amount of time roughly for job hunting and stuff like that and it kind of aligns itself with the probable delay in an EAD or Green Card anyway.

The red number is the visa number. The A# is the "alien number", and you are correct, it is handwritten on the I-94 and is also the number from the NOA2. You are also correct about the I-94#. Not sure why they need so many blasted different numbers, but it IS government you're dealing with!

Just got back from the medical exam. IF YOU STILL HAVE YOUR WIFE'S/FIANCEE'S X-RAY, HANG ON TO IT!!!!!!!

If you do not keep the X-ray, your SO will need to have another one. The Doctor's office did two X-rays of Lorena because we had thrown hers away at the airport. Noone ever asked for it and our understanding was it would be needed at the airport. So much for understanding.

The exam itself was fairly simple. Though they get a good amount of money for relatively little work. There were two X-rays - one from the back and one from the side - for all three of them, a blood test for Lorena (none for the boys), a very minimal exam consisting of looking in the ears, mouth, eyes, a brief glance at the boys' genitals (for evidence of syphilis, he said), a listen to the heart and lungs.... and that was it!

We were told to allow seven business days for the results. Also, ALL members of the family must be up to date on all listed vaccinations. The record for Lorena's older boy showed that he did not have a polio or tetanus shot. This record was from the office in Bogota that gave them their "final" set of immunizations. However, Lorena says she has a record from her home town which shows he has those vaccinations. The doctor's office will not begin preparing the medical exam package until they have complete records. This COULD push us past the end of the month. And that could mean triple the cost for the rest of the AOS process.

Wish us luck in finding the records and the doctor's office doing their job quickly.

Time is flying now... 17 more days and Mària has no clue that this person will be anxiously awaiting her at MIA just outside the exit from US Customs... she thinks work will have me tied up that day all the way 'til her arrival at ORD!!

19 more days and if all goes to plan there will be wedding ceremony #1...

Yes, this is the exam "we" just had (I was the interpreter, for God's sake!!! lol). The cost for Lorena was $165 and each of the boys (under 12) was $145 - at least at this doctor. Prices could be different in different places. If all the medical exams are like this one, they are a pi$$-poor effort by our government at preventing much of anything. But, it's done and some bureaucrat somewhere will be happy.

By the way we found the missing documents so no more vaccinations. :-)
