Yeah, photocopies is all you need. And actually recommend not to send anything original to the USCIS unless they requested, which they don't. You need to keep the originals in a safe place and make copies of it just in case.

Cool thanks a lot guys. Another thing is i was reading the instruction on where to file the AOS and it says i have to file to the Chicago Lockbox. If i file there, the application will not be processed there right? will it get sent to my local office? That would be unfortunate because if it does, i checked the processing times for the NYC office for AOS and it says they are still in October 2007 applications. Do you guys know if it gets sent there or can it be processed somewhere else?

In Texas you must have a social security number to get a drivers license. Consequently, she won't be able to get one until we file for AOS and she gets her social security card. We might end up following Andrea's suggestion and filing for AOS then simply dragging our feet a bit. She will need to start driving sooner or later, but I am not wild about having to buy another car.

Unfortunately, there are no English classes available at the community colleges around here until the beginning of the spring semester. In the meantime, I got her the full Rosetta Stone system which she is using on a daily basis. It is ridiculously expensive, but by all accounts, it is about the best way to study English. Hopefully, by the new semester starts, she will be ready to take an intermediate Spanish class.

In Georgia a Social Security number is also required for a DL, however a friend told me to go to the SS office and request a letter that state "not eligible for a ss number". I did that, took the letter, the I-94 and Passport and they have Oscar his learners and later his full DL.

I know you're not in a hurry for her DL, but if it comes up, its worth a try.

Here's a good FREE website to learn English. My husband uses it all the time: http://www.ego4u.com/

Good luck.

I just found out that people who file for EAD only get it approved for the amount of time their I-94 is valid for, which is 90 days. If they apply for EAD only after the I-94 has expired, it gets denied.

Just an DYI.

Really? So by the end of those 90 days she will hopefully be along her way of getting a SS or how does that work? I think Diana was being specific for an EAD without AOS in process.

The Chicago Lockbox is where you MUST send your AOS unless you have a friend at the NYC office.

They will send it usually to the National Benefits Center (Missouri) or to one of the main service centers like California, Texas, Vermont... etc. Which allows the possibility of calling for checkup eventually.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Ah ok got you. So it wont usually go to the NYC office right? They will tell you where it gets sent to on the NOA1 right? Thanks guys.

Yeah, I made the comment based on Colombianogringo's posts where he said he wanted to apply for EAD and have it handy just in case without having to file for AOS yet and make time in order to get the 10 year green card. So again, if it's past the 90 days, the EAD petition will get denied; so might as well file for AOS altogether.

Cool thanks for the clarification. I understand Colombianogringo's point for getting the 10 year card instead of the temporary one, but then again you want your wife to become a resident as soon as possible. I might be looking at the same scenario once i file for AOS but let's see what happens.

Exactly, Harold. Its more money up front, but if you will both need money as a married couple then in order for your SO to work beyond the 90-day EAD limit you'll have to have the AOS in process. Work earnings in the meantime should offset the extra cost of going through the 2 year, then 10 year GC.

Best wishes,

HAL 9000

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Heeyyyy Charles how's it going buddy?

My wife's cousin oversees a couple of online SENA classes... and makes a good amount of cash. So much so that she gave up an Au Pair position here in Chicago to stay home in Colombia and do the SENA courses when they were offered.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.
