Saludos Marcela... no hay problema.

Just remind your fiancé to politely ask for the EAD *stamp* at JFK Passport Control if you have a temp job lined up for him when he arrives. Its 90 days he can use, and an EAD in itself is sufficient to work WHILE the SSN is processed and given to your pareja. Even before you marry...

By the way, the male does not customarily change name when marriage happens here in the USA. If you are the USC, then you CAN do so, but don't have to if you don't choose to. Maybe "J" wants your last name? :D

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Hi gang.... Due to the holidays and travel, I've been away for a while and will try to catch back up soon.

We have had no news on the AOS front, however we did have one interesting development regarding Social Security. My wife's work authorization came through in mid-December. We went to the local Social Security office yesterday to apply for her SSN. The guy there said her information was still "not in the system from immigration", but he took the application anyway. I then presented the paperwork for Lorena's two sons. The guy said, "I know this makes absolutely no sense, but this is 'government' after all. Your boys will also have to get work authorizations from USCIS in order to get Social Security numbers."

In other words, two boys, ages 11 and 5, who cannot legally work in this country, need to have permission to work in order to get a Social Security number!?!?!?! What is this country coming to???

I've made an appointment with the local USCIS office to discuss this - if they will actually talk to me - on Thursday.

If the USCIS can't handle LEGAL immigrants more efficiently and sensibly than this, is it any wonder we have millions of ILLEGAL immigrants?

Charles

That's crazy!!! I've never heard of anything like that. I'm sure the SSA office guy was mistaken because that is beyond ridiculous.

It is seemingly crazy but not unexpected. After a couple of months being married we decided to go for the SSN with EAD in hand, similar to Charles. Still no update in the USCIS to SSA #######. The explanation they gave us was exactly that and that the delay for Maria to receive her SS# would be approximately 4-6 weeks instead of the usual 2-4.

Any similarity there, Charles??

FYI its now week 5 and nothing from SSA.

The guy we talked to said it would take "seven to ten days to hear back from USCIS" and then said things would progress "normally" (whatever that means). This is all well beyond ridiculous. I still have not been able to submit my state taxes from LAST year because I lack a SSN for Lorena, and when we receive the number, I will have to resubmit our amended federal taxes from last year to also show the number. Funny how when THEY need something, the need is immediate and we lose if we don't meet the deadline, but when it's OUR turn, we lose either way. Well, maybe not so funny.

Oh I can only relate to your pain Charles. There must be a way to file without a number... perhaps you can get her a Tax ID # directly from the IRS?? I am waiting a little longer before filing 2007 taxes... but it seems we are in a very similar predicament with this government inefficiency.

I tried that route last year, before Lorena arrived. That meant obtaining her signature on certain documents while she was still in Colombia, getting a power of attorney to act on her behalf, etc., etc. In the end, the person I talked to in IRS initially had given me bad, as well as incomplete, information, so when I submitted the package to get a tax ID for her, the whole thing was denied for a variety of reasons (sent to wrong office, missing a form the first person had not told me about, etc.). In the end, I gave up because I (foolishly at the time) figured she'd be here and have her SSN before I could resubmit for the tax ID.

By the way, I called my Senator's office again yesterday to see if there was any progress on my request for assistance with the AOS. They said that they had been swamped by requests right before the holidays, so our issue was still waiting in line for processing. I had submitted a similar request with the USCIS ombudsman's office in November. Still nothing from them, either.

Jeez... that's right, you guys were already married. What a pain that even though legally married and going through the K-3 process the IRS has no wits about them to accept joint filing (I assume you are going that route) from you and Lorena. One more silly little thing to fix!!

Now as for your Senator being swamped with requests I can probably believe... just let it go through. And keep hounding USCIS- someone will probably begin to think like a human being and not a robot with a bad memory loop somewhere.

Hi all.

I wanted to know if anyone here had use Dr. LE Arnold (from Texas) to do the vaccination’s transcript, from the overseas form to the I-693A.

My husband won't be here until the 29 of this month, he sent me an e-mail with the form and I'm thinking about using him to do the transcript and have it ready by the time he'll be here, I just need to know how long does it takes and how is the whole process, some kind of a review before considering him, that's why I haven't even called.

I live in Southern California, if someone knows a doctor who won't charge an arm and leg to do it, will be great too.

Thank you.

Hi Ana,

I'm not sure about that... we went to the local public health department and paid for the booster Mària needed, $20. The paperwork transfer was completely free and the staff was extremely friendly. You might want to check it out in California.

Well... today the mail brought us her SS Card!! So that must mean that Lorena's is on its way...

Keep up the faith folks.
