UPDATE ON SOCIAL SECURITY ISSUE:

OK....so we go to the social security office again today. The primary reason was to change my step-daughter's "status" with social security (from EAD to Permanent Resident). However, I was also a little sketchy as to why there was a problem with my wife's status change....and I wanted to get a more specific explanation before I went to Orlando to meet with USCIS on Friday.

The office was very busy and we waited for about 45 minutes. Once we got to the window, I decided to act as if this is the first time we had tried to change my wife's status (i.e., did not mention we had been there the previous week). We gave them the SS-5, her social security card, and her green card (we were eventually asked for a second piece of ID..and we provided my wife's Florida driver's license). Eventually the lady came back with the same conclusion....the file could not be updated. However, instead of simply referring us to USCIS, here is what she said: when she tried to update my wife's social security records, the system identified the change as "SUSPECT." The lady said not to worry....that often times this happens when someone with a new green card comes to the social security office too soon after the card was issued (a little strange, but then again it's the federal government). She said that it is normally better to wait 6-8 weeks after the green card is approved before trying to update the social security records. She gave my wife a document to sign and said that we'd hear back from them if there were any more problems.

The lady advised us to come back in a few weeks to handle my step-daughter's change of status....as, by then, we should not have the same problem.

Given the change of events, we are canceling our USCIS appointment.

So, for those who have gotten a social security card based on EAD, two things:

1) You must go to the social security office and update the status once the green card is issued.

2) In order to save yourself some hassle, you may want to wait about 6 weeks or so after the card is issued to do this....or you might end up with the same problem we did.

Hopefully, this will be the last of our little problem. If anything changes and it turns out there was some other problem, we'll let you know.

Mike

Great news for you Mike!!

Good to hear that it was finally resolved. Just as I thought, some workers just dont give a damn and dont even try to help you with your situation, and others like you just told should be commended.

Last night we made friends with a gentleman at the Colombian Consulate here in Chicago. He recommended getting a free Conslulary ID, all you'd need is a local piece of evidence with address (bill, etc) and the Colombian passport. Its accepted as State ID here in Illinois so it may also be a similar situation in surrounding Midwestern states.

As for the 693a's... check out your public health authorities... we did not pay a dollar for that stuff.

Welcome home to those about to start a new life in good company!

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Anyone know if its possible for someone in the US on k-4 with a Colombian passport to travel to Mexico? Thanks.

Hi SilkRoad,

Your best bet is to wait for the Green Card or apply for Advance Parole. Mucha suerte.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Yes....just as it would be for a K-3. However, based on my e-mail correspondence with the Mexican Consulate, he or she will need a visa. Once he or she adjusts status and gets the green card, then there's not visa needed.

Mike

I stand corrected.

My bank told me the Government took a grand out of my account today, so that must mean the AOS is now officially " in " the pipeline.

We have been blessed with some luck here....Just got a email out of the blue that our Green Card was in production.

No interview, no RFE's, no nothing.

I'm not sure what gave us the good luck here. We didnt' apply for EAD or Advance Parole, we included lots of stuff about our relationship, (bank accounts, lease, joint phone bills), we waited 2.5 months to apply from the marriage date.

Not sure if any of that had any effect on the outcome, but it looks like this stage is almost done.

We got a SS card originally in her maiden name, and will need to go change it...hopefully that will not be an issue.

I would be happy to answer any questions about our submissions and what we did or did not include.

Awesome OjosAzules... that's the way it should hopefully work out for all of us. The last person I spoke to about AOS got RFE'd for evidence much like the one you submitted, and the funny thing was that he submitted the very same stuff they were asking him for... anywhoo... just do it.

Now you can rest a little easier... just get your lifting countdown started.

Wishing you ten-fold that which you wish upon all others.

Congrats, OjosAzules!!! That gives me a little hope. I finally got to talk to a real person at USCIS regarding Lorena's EAD application. We sent it on July 27. The lady I talked to told us not to expect a response for another month. She said they were working on "end of June" applications right now.

That's probably the same as with the initial petitions Charles... chances are you two should be within that 11 week time frame they post on their website... Time to start getting Lorena "ready" for the work force soon... I know Maria is and has been ready...

Question for you guys if you don't mind me asking since you're waiting for EADs for your wives. What kind of jobs are your SOs looking for? Do they speak English?

My husband started working for my brother in-law who's a general contractor but I don't think he's very happy doing it, mainly because of the language barrier since nobody there speaks Spanish. And also because he's not used to that type of work. I told him that we could start looking to see what else was out there for him while he goes to school to learn English.

What are your thoughts on this?

Thanks!

Diana
