Hello,

I am a US citizen living in Japan.  I am 27 and have been teaching abroad for the last 6 years since I graduated university.  I recently got engaged to a Vietnamese girl here in Japan.  We would like to move to America and are thinking of doing the K1 visa.  We have been in a relationship for more than 2 years and have no problem proving that.  We are very concerned about if we would be rejected because I don’t have a job, house, car or any major assets in America.  My parents would be willing to co-sponsor with us and I have a degree in business and I would plan to get a job in business when I return.  Is it likely that we would still be rejected even with my parents co-sponsoring us because I don’t have a job yet lined up in America? My contract in Japan goes until July, but we are wondering if it is necessary that I should try to return to America soon and get a job before we start the K1 process or would it be ok to stay in Japan until July and start the K1 now even though I don’t have any job lined up in America in the future yet.

I think it could work out, so long as your parents will co-sign for you.

Have you considered a CR-1 where you marry there in Japan, file the CR-1 which has the propensity to allow your bride to enter the USA and receive a SSN and a GC within week of arrival as well as gives a little more leverage in the visa process as she is already married to you. 

 

Back to your question. With a strong co-sponsor for the K-1 you shouldn't have a problem with securing the visa in Vietnam or Japan.
