Mike Bloomberg pledges to get it done

In another article the political wonk noted on the subject of grappling with where candidates should spend their resources:

“Bloomberg doesn’t grapple. He just does all of it. He advertises everywhere. He staffs up everywhere. He’s actually been quietly traveling around everywhere,” said Bob Shrum, the veteran Democratic consultant who steered John Kerry’s 2004 White House bid. “Buttigieg will apparently have resources, but it’ll be a fifth or a tenth of what Bloomerg will spend. Even Sanders — with all the fundraising prowess he has — will be massively outspent by Bloomberg.”

Virginia Poll: Bloomberg 22, Sanders 22, Biden 18

February 18, 2020 4:27 PM

A new Monmouth poll of Virginia, one of the states to vote on Super Tuesday (March 3), shows Michael Bloomberg and Bernie Sanders in a dead heat, with Joe Biden four points back.

Bloomberg 22

Sanders 22

Biden 18

Buttigieg 11

Klobuchar 9

Warren 5

One interesting nugget in the poll is that both Biden and Bloomberg would each beat Sanders in a head-to-head match-up in Virginia, but Klobuchar and Buttigieg would each slightly trail the Vermont socialist:

The poll asked voters how they would vote in a hypothetical two-person race pitting Sanders against one of the more moderate candidates. In these scenarios, Sanders edges past both Klobuchar (45% to 42%) and Buttigieg (44% to 42%) but comes out on the losing end against Bloomberg (41% to 47%) and by an even wider margin against Biden (38% to 51%.

If Biden manages to win South Carolina, it’s easy to see states like Virginia breaking for him on Super Tuesday. But if he does poorly in the first-in-the-South primary, his supporters could break toward Bloomberg, Buttigieg, or Klobuchar depending on how the next two weeks play out. Monmouth reports that 11 percent of likely Virginia Democratic primary voters “remain undecided and do not lean toward any candidate at this time.” Delegates are only awarded to candidates who get 15 percent or more of the vote

Pete Buttigieg Hoped to Win Over Voters of Color. It Still Hasn’t Happened.

There is not much sign that he has attracted significantly more black and Latino voters in Nevada and South Carolina, as he had said would happen after strong finishes in Iowa and New Hampshire

Actually, with the new rules Bernie blessed, it seems more likely that a brokered convention will materialize.  It will be fun to see.

Isn't it funny how a new candidate pops up and his poll numbers are really high..... UNTIL he opens his mouth and actually participates in a debate.

Not just talking about Bloomberg, but all candidates in general.

No doubt, remember when Joe was in front?  Then he actually started campaigning.

Rep. Jennifer Wexton (D-Va.) on Sunday endorsed former vice president Joe Biden for the Democratic presidential nomination, changing her decision to stay neutral in the race two days before the Virginia primary on Super Tuesday.

Wexton won her Northern Virginia district in 2018, turning the seat blue for the first time in 38 years and helping Democrats win control of the House.

“Throughout this campaign, Joe has proven that he is the steady, empathetic leader we need to unite our party and our country. I will proudly be casting my vote for Joe Biden this Tuesday,” she said in a statement provided to The Washington Post by the Biden campaign.

THE WASHINGTON POST

Fourteen states and one U.S. territory will hold nominating contests on Super Tuesday, to award a total of 1,357 delegates. To put that in perspective, you need 1,991 delegates to win the nomination.

The states are across the country — literally from California to Maine — and include heavily Democratic Massachusetts, traditionally Republican Texas and Oklahoma and more in-between states like Colorado, North Carolina and Virginia. Democrats who live in American Samoa will also caucus on Super Tuesday, and Democrats who live abroad will begin casting ballots.

[Turnout in South Carolina makes Biden’s win even more impressive]

It’s the delegate total, not the sheer number of votes, that counts when figuring out who wins a party’s presidential nomination. Each state is allotted a certain number of delegates based on a formula of population and weight in the Democratic Party. The state parties then award delegates to the candidates based on the votes they receive. The first candidate to get a majority of the nearly 4,000 delegates wins the nomination.
