I've recently gotten engaged to a Russian citizen living outside the US and we're planning to begin the K-1 visa process soon. My fiance has a educational opportunity in another state that may or may not pan out in the end, but in the event that it does work out, we'd like to move to another state to pursue it.

I've heard that once the visa process is started, one should not move as changes of address can complicate things with change of address forms getting lost or things getting sent to the old address.

My question is when is it safe to move? I assume we should stay put until after the K-1 is approved, we're married and my spouse has received the conditional green card. But what about after that? Have any of you had experience moving at any point during this process?

We're also considering having my spouse move ahead of me and me moving after I find a job in the new state. Hopefully that period of separation would be brief. I know there will be another interview for the permanent greencard, and I wonder how they would perceive this. Do you think a period of separation would be problematic or could it be just fine assuming we do end up living together ASAP?

USCIS will not send you any mail between when the petition is approved and when you file for AOS, or between conditional GC and when you apply for removal of conditions. But while USCIS has been known to not catch up with address changes, many people move during the process without issues.
