Been lurking on this forum for a while, it's been a great resource for us, Thanks. I know this topic has probably been beaten into the ground but my interview is in 1 week and I'm kinda freaking out over it a little. My main concern is the fact that I was turned back at the US border on a flight way back in 1998 because I had a 1 way ticket and no clear destination other than that i was going to meet up with a friend in Texas. ( i was a very inexperienced traveller back then....hadn't been on a flight since i was 10)

I know on the DS 156 there is a question regarding if you have ever been denied entry before. They did allow me in the next day when i had a return ticket, and provided proof of canadian residence, banking, etc. Obviously I do not want to lie about this on the form or the interview but this, combined with a minor criminal record (dui in 2000) have me worried senseless now that it has all been for naught.

Others on VJ have been denied entry to the USA and it was brought up at the interview. They told the truth --yes they were denied---and it wasnt a problem for them. As long as u were honest, all should be ok!!

Canadians Visiting the USA while undergoing the visa process, my free advice:

1) Always tell the TRUTH. never lie to the POE officer

2) Be confident in ur replies

3) keep ur response short and to the point, don't tell ur life story!!

4) look the POE officer in the eye when speaking to them. They are looking for people lieing and have been trained to find them!

5) Pack light! No job resumes with you

6) Bring ties to Canada (letter from employer when ur expected back at work, lease, etc etc)

7) Always be polite, being rude isn't going to get ya anywhere, and could make things worse!!

8) Have a plan in case u do get denied (be polite) It wont harm ur visa application if ur denied, that is if ur polite and didn't lie! Refer to #1

Do not take an MP3 player, from what I've read, they'll just have you throw it in the garbage or you will have to find some place to keep it before you enter the consulate.

Don't worry, you'll be fine.. Just be honest

Take an mp3 player with you or a book you can't put down to distract yourself just before so you don't go in there in a panic

Personally I wouldn't take anything in.. security is tough.. and anything extra will slow you down.

Bring your imagination, and do some deep breathing and imagine yourself in the US with your sweetheart :)

Thanks. I suppose i'm freaking out for nothing but it just seems like these are 2 negatives right off the bat that we will no doubt be discussing. I'll let everyone know how it goes.

No such thing my friend.. this is a crazy ride you are on.. I was a wreck the week before.. and on the day before my interview there was a MASSIVE snow storm that closed all airports east of TO.. AHHH! I missed the 1st flight and just made it to MTL in time :) You have every right to freak! But it will be fine my friend.. keep on keeping on! :)

SO....It is coming on Thursday. I am currently filling out the Electronic DS 156 forms...what did you all put down for the "Do you intend to work in the US" question? I intend to work , but if you answer YES then you need to fill out an employers name and address. I do not know WHERE i am going to work yet.

jesus this stuff is exhausting.
