Emmanuel Macron has waded into a row over a schoolgirl whose attack on Islam has divided France, insisting that blasphemy is “no crime”.

The French president defended the teenager, named only as Mila, who received death threats and was forced out of her school after filming an anti-religious diatribe on social media.

Macron’s intervention comes after his justice minister, Nicole Belloubet, was criticised for claiming Mila’s attack on religion was “an attack on freedom of conscience” while saying the death threats were “unacceptable”.

Always amusing to watch when the preferred religion bumps heads with the preferred gender.

They set themselves up to learn the hard way what catering to this belief system is going to cause. Authoritarianism is an appetite that's never satiated.

Kind of like handling a snake and being shocked when it bites you

Are you saying that female is the "preferred" gender? I can tell you as someone who has been female every day of her life, it is not, not even in France.

Well I wasn't, could have been a bloke and the issue in this case still stands.

I am going to assume you have an understanding of French separation of State and Religion, much more real than in the US, in the UK of course we tend to ignore it, well have done so for a long time.

So inevitably and something Progressive beliefs have issues with, they focus on intersectionality without knowing how to deal with the inevitable consequences of when different minorities bump up against each other. Which one takes priority?  You can feel the awkwardness in the Guardian coverage.

Thank you for explaining your position a little better. And I agree that there can be real problems with intersectional issues. My own opinion (for whatever it is worth) is that at least in the US, all sides should make their cases for whatever their position is. If there is a stronger legal or moral basis for one to prevail then that is the one that should "win." The cold reality of life is that it is often messy and there is no winner, or maybe only a winner in the short term.

I do understand that the separation of church and state is enshrined even more deeply in France than here in America -- my grandparents came from France as immigrants and my dad made sure I learned some about French history, as well as what I learned in school. My grandparents were both Catholics but (according to my dad) never really could understand the permeability (I can't think of a more appropriate word) of the two institutions in this country where there is supposed to be a wall between them. The UK I know some about too from my own exposure living there (my ex is a practicing Anglican) and how the monarch is both the head of church and head of state. (I remember all my Henry VIII history too.) So I guess my own sympathies here are with the girl, because blasphemy isn't a crime in France, no? So why should any one religion be given preference over another? This is of course beyond the fact that death threats are wrong (duh).

I can tell you that as someone who is quite a bit older than you, that it IS the preferred gender.  Has been since longer than you have been living.
