Hi guys, I just have a question hoping you can help me. I became a US citizen last Sept. 27, 2019 and on Oct. of 2019 we moved to another state. My question is since I’ve been here to another state for more than 3 months now and I didn’t update my new address to USCIS do I have to update my new address to USCIS now that I’m a citizen even if it’s more than 3months now I’ve been here? Thanks

As a USC, you don’t need to inform USCIS with your change of address unless you are a sponsor to any LPRs by filing i864.

Thanks arken, glad to hear that 😊 coz I’m worried that I forgot to inform the USCIS when we moved after I become a citizen. No I didn’t sponsor anyone, but wanting to petition my brother but worried about affidavit of support because I’m a housewife and my husband is the only one working and he’s retiring next year. But thanks again for your input I really appreciate it 😊👍

If you want to petition your brother, just go for it now. You don’t have to worry about affidavit of support for next 14 years or more. In those many years, anything can happen from getting nice paying job to hitting the megamillion 😉 to no more provision of siblings immigration to population wipeout by coronavirus.

Oh I see, I didn’t know that you don’t need those requirements until the next 14 or more years. I thought you have to provide those proof when you send the application. But yeah your right, hopefully one day we hit the powerball or mega millions lol that would be nice hehe.. 😉

petitioning siblings can take more than 20 years before they touch and approve your application for petition, so yeah i wont be so worried about the affidavit for support right now.

Really? Oh my, that takes forever for the immigration to approve such application? Hmm.. I don’t even know if it’s worth it coz if that’s the case my brother who is in his 30+ yrs old married and have a daughter by the time he gets approved I be like 62 yrs old lol I don’t even know if that time if ever I have a job at 62 was gonna be enough to show that I can support him. This is crazy

Yes, I even want to petition my siblings but knowing it will take forever, I don't think its a good idea.

To clarify, the issue is not processing timelines. Visas for siblings are limited by law annually. There is just such a backlog of people waiting for one ahead of you. Even if they processed the paperwork in 1 week, it would just sit the rest of the time because there’s no visa number available yet.

Really? So you didn’t petition your siblings because of that too? I know it’s crazy, knowing that we all going to wait forever and another disadvantage is our age after all those years of waiting I don’t think it’s worth the wait especially we’re not getting any younger. Like I said if 20 years from now I be 60+ yrs old and my brother will be 50+ so there’s not a lot of time to build their lives here before they were done with the immigration and become a citizen. And it’s not 100% sure that they will approve it when it comes to financial proof that they need from us especially if the time comes and I’m on my 60’s 😔

I see, too bad. They should change that and hopefully it will be the same as petitioned for parents, spouses and children that doesn’t need to wait forever to get here. I guess even tho I really want them to be here with me but I’m getting discouraged about the fact that we all have to wait forever just to get them here.

Contact your Congressperson, and vote. This is in place by law.

As for the reason behind it, it is considered a need-based system for family reunification. There is generally not a high need to live in the same country as a sibling. Whereas a spouse, being together is deemed a very high need. Same for a minor child. Same for a parent (usually perceived as a means to take care of them as they get old).

The US is one of the few western countries that even allows immigration on the basis of being a sibling of a citizen.

Just some background info.

Part of the issue for you particularly is Philippines has a very high rate of immigration to the US, so immigrants are affected by the 7% quota per country per year (doesn’t apply to immediate relative categories). Add to that siblings are lowest priority. They are currently processing for visas, sibling petitions that were approved prior to July 1999 for Philippines.  This wait will likely continue getting longer over time. You may as well file it and see what you and your brother think about it in 20-25 years time when it gets current...
