If you do not owe any taxes, I would recommend filing for an automatic extension to October 15, form 4868.  That gives you plenty of time for his arrival (hopefully) in the US, receive the SSN a week or two after arrival, then file as married filing jointly.  Another option is try a big 4 accounting firm in Honduras like KPMG, they are certified acceptance agencies and can certify the W-7 for your husband, to get an ITIN now.  Good luck!

Yes! I forgot I could file an extension, but hoping he will be here before then. However I do have that option if needed. Thanks!!

Thank you to everyone who has helped me with this process!! I have a very clear idea of what I need to do, which is wait. Thanks again for the support and advice.

We're in the same boat. Social security office messed up multiple times and didn't issue a SSN 3 weeks after arrival on K1. I'm thinking about just filing the extension because we would lose a lot of money filing separately.

 

As much as I hate giving the IRS an interest free loan on my money, the ITIN is a massive pain that I don't want to deal with. There is NO WAY we are shipping the passport.
