Hi All

I need some advice please, my son has submitted an I-130 form for myself which is going through the process. Being positive and planning a head if all goes well and i'm accept can any one advise how I open a bank account etc.  As my son, daughter in law & grandson live in a small house so moving in with them is not an option.  Which means i need to find an apartment for at least 6-12 months whilst i look for a job etc and decide where to settle the good news is there seems to be lots of apartments with in my price range, however to sign for an apartment i'm going to need a bank account in order to put funds in to pay for said apartment.  In order to get a bank account i'm going to need a fixed address (which i won't have) in order for the account, card etc to be sent to............... you can see my dilemma.  its like a chicken or the egg scenario.

Any advice on how to do this would be greatly appreciated as i cant seem to work out how to do it.

Use your Son's address?

Correspond with the apartments. Will they take a credit card payment  for the deposit? Will they give you a lease before you have a SSN?  Some want that to run a security check using the SSN before leasing.

Also try Bank of America. They seem to be more flexible opening accounts for foreigners prior to having a greencard.

Where will you be staying when you arrive?

Its not as easy as that as its not his property as it belongs to his in laws so I want to try and avoid complications of my details being registered at his address. I'd like to do this correctly and without saying i'm somewhere i'm not, if that makes sense.

I see nothing wrong in having your son's address as a temporary measure until you get settled......address changes are quite easy to make.

I can appreciate why you would think that but he has asked me specifically not to so i need to respect his wishes on the subject and find an alternative.

That's a lot different.  I would rent a post office box for mail until I was firmly settled in an apartment.

You can open your bank account in that month as a resident/greencard holder. Will be easier than while abroad and a nonresident. Also go in person to get your SSN rather than checking the box on your immigration papers saying to have one sent. That doesn’t always work quickly.
