If you're Canadian they'll let you in for up to 6 months at a time, and they generally won't record anything about what you say your intended time of stay is, so you don't have to worry about sticking to exact dates for your return. It's almost always just a blanket 6 month max duration permission to visit. If you spend more than 6 months in the US in one calendar year cumulinatively, I believe you have to file taxes with the IRS and declare your global income come tax season, but otherwise there isn't anything legally to worry about other than potentially losing provincial health benefits for spending too much time out of the country. You are allowed to stay for almost 6 months and then turn around the next day/week and try to go into the US again, then stay for up to 6 months again lol. Your mileage may vary depending on what side of the bed customs woke up on.
