I saw this and thought of the discussion I was having with @Nature Boy 2.0 about my visit to a strip club in college.

Quote

And as for the dancers, female customers were often a welcome change, said Antonia Crane, an activist, professor and dancer who has logged more than 10,000 hours as a stripper over a 25-year career.

"We love women coming into strip clubs, it's fun," Crane said. "Stripping is women's labour. The only thing that's terrible about stripping and the sex industry in general are the unfair labour practices", she said - citing poor wages, exploitation, and sexual assault.

Supporting that labour was "so important", Crane said. And, she added, not hard to do.

"Rule number one is pay her," she said. "Have fun and be nice."

The impression I got from my one visit was that we were welcome by both management and the dancers because we were (as that quote says) having fun and being nice. I probably wouldn't do it again, but it isn't anything I am embarrassed about having done. Visiting, I mean.

I once got launched from a strip club. Not family friendly story, but involved 3 components. Youth, Dollar Bills and alcohol

Is it available if I pay for the platinum membership? :P

Question, Nature Boy: is it or is it not acceptable behavior for a person (I am not naming names but it starts with an A and ends with an x) to announce after having a very large early dinner of AYCE Korean BBQ, that he is sleepy and needs to take a nap literally as you are pulling into the Whole Foods parking lot and then proceeds within 15 seconds of such announcement to fall into said nap and stay in said nap for 25 minutes while you are sitting there fuming in your rental car and wanting to just get on with going into the Whole Foods and doing the shop?

Asking for a friend.

(Apologies, this probably belongs in the non-derailable thread.)

Sounds like the man was kept awake at night and needs sleep, or he has serious narcolepsy. At any rate doesn't stop you from leaving him there and shopping.

PS: Women can make $s however they want. However the industry is so eww and a large reason for women to do it is poor opportunities for them elsewhere. You going to such a club supports an industry that is rife with abuse. Personally would never consider doing it. But then again I was raised very differently than most.

Meh, not necessarily "poor opportunities" elsewhere, at least not always.  Sometimes it's the allure of quick cash that draws women.  Why finish college when working in such a club can net you 10-100X more money than a 9-5 job?

We were up late the night before -- no need to get into details. Also meat coma. I wanted him to come inside and help me choose what we need for the week. He has made a point of wanting to be more involved with household tasks than he was in the past (in his previous marriage that is) and that means that he wants to be involved in shopping. I guess it's just that when I make a commitment to doing something, I follow through unless I'm really unable. He wanted to stay in the car, but I reminded him he agreed to help. And if that meant that I had to sit around, so be it. He was apologetic and frankly kind of shocked he'd fallen asleep for that long.

I guess it comes down to this: if someone says to you, I am not going to be this type of person anymore, and I do not want you to assume you have to do everything, I expect that person to step up. I have spent an entire marriage of over six years stepping up and doing all the house stuff. I don't begrudge that -- I was a housewife and it was part of the deal. But if someone says I want to share the load, it's disappointing for them to assume you'll pick up the slack because it's what you've always done.

I went to the strip club as part of a piece my friend was writing for a student journal -- she wanted some other women with her so she could feel less squicky. I wouldn't do it again, but it happened. :) I'm also a little older than 21 now.

Sometimes people, women, need quick cash in desperate circumstances, like tuition being due or a major medical bill in the family. I don't judge even though personally I'd never do it.

NEVER say "never".  One never knows.  Suffice it to say, "not thus far".

Also, women who do it for several years are not desperate for money, IMO. They just enjoy the extra income that comes from not having to work as hard/long.

As for the ignorant title of the article, how can one possibly see visiting a strip club as anti-feminist?  All you are doing is helping to pay their salaries, supporting their lifestyle.  No different than eating at a restaurant or going to a movie theater.

My friends and I would go to the strip clubs to play pool. Most other places had too many dudes around the pool tables to get in a game but strip clubs always seem to have open pool tables!

How people choose to earn their money is up to them. It sucks that due to stigma we can't make places like strip clubs or even prostitution safer for the people who choose to make that their living.  And while many are forced, many also make the choice.
