And Orange county is pretty awesome, as is California in general. The national parks are cool.

I visited Orange county a couple years ago......I enjoyed the area.....

Then the things I like about the US will be limited to the good weather in OC and my family here.

Yeah, the bill is there.  But not the HOW.

The US spends about $13,847 per student each year in K-12.  For roughly 35.6 million children.  That's approximately $493 billion already being paid for by our taxes.

If we add the approximately 19.9 million college enrollees, at an average cost of $27,226, that's about $541.8 billion extra in ADDITIONAL taxes needed.  Each year.

At 155.7 million employed, that means that the average person will have to pay an additional $3,480 each year in taxes.  (Yes, this would be prorated up and down the income scales).

But here's the rub... if YOU pay for YOUR kids' college, the bill goes away when they graduate and the loans (if any) are paid off.  If you pay for free education for everyone, then you pay that (average) $3,480 for life.  For many people, that would amount to over $200,000 that they paid for someone else's kids to go to school "for free".  Are YOU willing to cough up an extra $200,000 of your income for my kids?

And you know $13,847 sounds like a lot doesn't it? And yet, well, it's just not enough in many cases. School systems are dysfunctional, kids aren't learning and teachers are barely hanging on. When a child isn't learning and feels worthless and hopeless, we know where they turn as young adults.

That's already been figured out by many countries. Also, K-12 education is free now, so it can be done.

Ok, and? How are the kids learning? How are the standards? Is the building crumbling? Is the system dysfunctional? Are teachers underpaid and lack resources? Because honestly, touting it's free is silly if there's no actual learning going on and teachers can't do the job.

Here in OC there are some great schools. My spouse went to a public school and he's pretty smart, too.

How about out of the OC bubble though? You won't find so many good things, particularly in inner-city schools.

Not all problems will be solved by making public universities tuition free, it's just one solution to one problem. There are still other issues that need to be addressed. Even if education is not free, those problems will persist.

I don't believe that throwing free money at a problem that continues to grow more bloated and severely deteriorating across the country will solve those issues.

Why not actually determine the root cause of the issue before throwing money at it?  Why are universities selling something that not everyone needs to buy?

Come to America.  Complain about how we do things.  Try to change the US to act more like the countries with failed social models.  Leave the US when it becomes like so many countries that failed before it.  Wonder why America is still such a terrible place.

Or, come to America and enjoy your freedoms, work hard and prosper, and make life better for your future generations.  Seems to have been working for over 240 years now.

Of course that not everyone needs higher education, some people are not cut out for it/not smart enough/not hard working enough. But those who choose to be educated shouldn't be penalized with crippling debt.

Just wow.  I hope you never need a not so hard working plumber or electrician to ever do any work for you. However again, you are not addressing the root cause, why is the cost of college outpacing inflation by a factor of four to five?

Plumbers and electricians also go to school, it's a skilled job. BTW, Bernie will make school for them free, too.
