everyone does have access to educational opportunities - they just have to join the military.

Not everyone is a candidate for joining the military though. And I know the history of the GI Bill. :P

Fine but let them serve in some way. Why should citizen A earn  thiers thru Military service, job savings etc, and citizen B just be handed something for free

Sure! We need more opportunities for people to give back, and I have no problem (as if it matters really what I think!) with people doing civilian service instead. I don't think there needs to be only one road, necessarily.

But there are other ways of "doing" for your country that don't involve military service. Americorps or the Peace Corps, for example.

You feel it is messed up to serve your country?  I feel it is an honor.  And I actually think that EVERYONE over the age of 18 should have to serve in some capacity.  It works in other countries, why not here?

Why shouldn't all Americans have access to educational opportunities? I really don't mean to be disrespectful in any way to people who have served our country in the military, but why shouldn't more Americans get a leg up, particularly those who come from the working classes? We can do this for all of us, if those of us with more (and I am one who falls in that category) give a little more. I want us all to succeed. There are plenty of people for whom the military is not a realistic option -- why should the door be closed to them?

BTW, I don't like the use of "GI Bill" here at all. I just want to make that clear.

ALL Americans should give freely to their country.  $100 a month pay for 36 months of service.  Can be military, fire, medical, police, whatever floats your boat.

Your idea of "educational opportunity", and the idea of those who have served to get their GI Bill is quite different, I suspect.

That puts you in the 99%.  Which is fine.  You do you.

I'll get over it by knowing I've never contributed to world chaos fought for the sake of US defense contractors and other interests... Oops, I mean world peace, of course.

There are multiple ways of serving one's country honorably though. I've mentioned a couple, and others have been mentioned. Why should there be only one route that is deserving of a subsidized education?

So have I.  I never said "one route".

I think this quote by JFK is really more about the fact that the Democrats (most of them) are promoting the nanny state where the government provides everything.

All American's do have access to educational opportunities.  I came from a working class family of eight kids, my parents encouraged our education, but could in no way pay for it.  Out of the eight of us, five finished with degrees, and the other three took more vocational routes.  Of the five that went to college, it was called, "paying for it on your own", working and studying at the same time, working multiple jobs, and taking out loans that were all paid back.  You know, taking responsibility for oneself instead of relying on the parents, or the government (taxpayers) to pay for it.  I just loved the way Elizabeth Warren brushed off that father who asked her about this, emblematic of the Democrat/Leftist Party.

The GI bill is there for a reason - to provide assistance and opportunity to those persons who want to serve their country. As with many services offered to veterans, the reward is offered because they are and were willing to sacrifice their lives.

For the rest of the populace there are plenty of programs available to assist those that want a better education. My husband works with those persons every day. They didn't choose fancy colleges, but chose community and technical colleges that could provide an education and vocations to help them succeed in life and raise them out of poverty.
